The Fiat 500-based Abarth 595 hot hatch has been updated this year, with new personalisation options and some technology upgrades. The Abarth 595 is an entirely different machine to the standard Fiat 500 models. Abarth models feature more aggressive, sexier styling, and a scorching little powerplant that will leave you grinning ear to ear.
You can buy one of these cute little hot hatches in a hard-top hatchback version or as a soft-top convertible. Now available as the Abarth 595 Competizione, the latest models are powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre engine that pumps out a rather healthy 132 kW of power, combined with 250 Nm or torque. That’s some 30-odd Nm and 15 kW more than our 2007 2.4-litre Camry Sportivo, so these are quite potent numbers considering the car’s small dimensions and its rather trim 1000 kg weight. The muscle-packed Competizione versions sit on bigger alloy wheels (205/40R17 tyres), have a tighter suspension with Koni FSD shocks, a limited slip-diff, and stop with the power of Brembo brakes. All this means that the little Abarth 595 Competizone Hatchback and Convertibles are great fun in the corners and will sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in around 6.9 seconds.
Your 2022 Abarth 595 models may have small dimensions, but their interiors can seat four adults in relative comfort. The cabin comes complete with satellite navigation and Uconnect infotainment, all of which displays itself on a 7.0-inch touchscreen. You also get a set of leather sports front seats and seven airbags. Climate control air conditioning, a sound system with digital radio, a Heads-up display, a digital driver’s display with digital instrumentation, Android Auto and/or Apple CarPlay, Smartphone charging, parking assistance, parking sensors, Halogen headlights and paddle shifters all set the racy wee Abarth up superbly. The car does have a sports mode and, for this year, the ‘Sport’ mode has even been changed to ‘Scorpion’ mode, and pressing the button on the dashboard thus affects peak torque delivery, power steering calibration and engine response to the accelerator pedal, making them all feel sharper.
The interior boasts a sporty theme, where you get loads of bright red details, that pair of super-supportive seats with logos, a racing car-inspired rev counter and carbon fibre trims on the dashboard and doors. It’s a great look that does capture attention. Passengers in the back will find legroom is limited, particularly if you are a tall adult. There is only two seats instead of the more usual three in the back of the Competizione models. Also, you may want to know that it isn’t that easy to get kiddie seats in and out of the back seats. Boot space is 185-litres.
All things considered, this is the sort of car you want to have if there is just the two of you heading away for a blast during the weekend, where the road sends you through some hills and tight twisty turns. Long straight motorways can get a bit wearing with the hustle and bustle of the engine and road noise, so its not a touring machine in the same way a Falcon or Commodore were designed to eat up the miles on Australian roads. That said, the Abarth 595C Competizione is one of the only small hot hatches on sale which comes with a folding fabric roof. That makes it a that much more special nowadays, and thus a fun to drive, little car that sings a rorty exhaust chorus out the rear. Sun and wind in the hair, this unique driving experience is hard to find now, especially for the price. If you’ll be using it solely for blasting down country roads with a few twisties, and you like the wind in your hair, the Abarth 595C Competizione is priceless!
Your new 2022 Abarth Competizione does come with some serious street cred. From the front, you enjoy a huge gaping grille, extra black air intakes and a ground-hugging splitter. At the side, you’ll find a set of large alloy wheels and a low-riding, sporty side skirt. And then around the back are more air vents and a pair of chrome exhaust tips peeking out through a black sports diffuser. It is a looker, even as much of a looker as a current Porsche about town – if not, more so. Got the convertible? Then slide the roof back and this one’s a winner!
A 3-year 150,000 km warranty and three years roadside assist come as part of the deal on any new Abarth 595. And if you’ve been won over by the little Abarth, there are plenty of Fiat dealerships scattered about Australia. Head on down and buy one for yourself, and you will experience what Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat, Lancia & Abarth Brands described these cars as being: “A small supercar that can evoke a wealth of feeling on the road as well as on the track. Many are its secrets: the ‘explosive’ performance, the sound of the exhaust, its irreverent and playful style, but packed with style and personality and, clearly, the pleasure of driving…”
