It’s not hard to fall in love with a car like this: the updated 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulietta. It is a car model that’s been around a few years now, but the updates and new technical equipment have kept this wee beauty up with the times. Refreshingly stylish and well-equipped, the new Giulietta is an enjoyable drive – and those looks!
There are a couple of engines offered to the 2020 Giulietta; so let’s start with the engine found in the Giulietta Super. Here we find a special 1.4-litre TB Multi-Air Turbo engine. The 1.4 Turbo petrol engine puts out 90 kW, combines with a slick six-speed manual gearbox and puts the power down onto the road via the front wheel drive set up. The engine is a willing performer and will happily beat 10 seconds for the 0-100 km/h sprint. Ride and handling is firm and rewarding, and the car purrs along smoothly. You can expect to get less than 7 litres/100 km on average for the car’s fuel consumption.
Alfa Romeo also provides the Giulietta Veloce engine. This petrol engine is a joy and it is known as the 1750 Tbi Turbo petrol engine. It’s a 1.8-litre that delivers the goods on the performance front. You have 180 kW on tap, as well as 340 Nm of torque. This equates to a very exciting drive where the 0-100 km/h sprint can be performed in a mere six seconds, and you can let it run out to well over 240 km/h on the right piece of road. The gearbox for the Veloce is a sports automatic.
In the new Giulietta you have the choice of a few driving modes to play with, so things like the responsiveness of the engine, the weighting of the steering and the level of intervention of the electrical driver assists are altered accordingly for each mode. Generally, the ride remains firm and sporty, and both the Super and Veloce are decent cars to drive enthusiastically down twisty roads with the odd sharp bend thrown in for good measure. There isn’t much in the way of body roll and the steering is direct, fast and responsive. Certainly, the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta feels like an Alfa should when driven quickly.
Whichever engine you go for, the Giulietta comes with a whole suite of electronic driver aids that complement the six airbags, passive safety systems and active anti-whiplash head restraints. The car has a solid safety cage and scored extremely well back in Euro NCAP 2010’s crash testing; 2017 testing was much stricter and the Giulietta didn’t quite match the five stars but remains a solid little car.
Its distinctive looks are certainly among its strong points and, in general, the 2020 Giulietta’s eye-catching and well laid out interior is also everything you’d expect from a new Alfa Romeo. Unique design, cool looking dials, sensuous upholstery and modern technology make the Giulietta a delightful space to travel in 2020. You get the latest touchscreen infotainment system, and even things like wireless charging, USB ports, DAB (digital) radio, Bluetooth connectivity, electric windows, alloy wheels and air conditioning are part of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta experience.
Practical things include a height adjustable driver’s seat, a 12V socket, front seat back storage pockets, a 12V socket in the luggage compartment, 60/40 split folding rear seat, 2 outer rear head restraints, a cooled glovebox, Isofix child seat points, a nice front centre armrest with a decent storage compartment, 350 litres boot space (1045 litres rear seats down) and cup holders.
Step into an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Super, and you’ll get equipment like adaptive cruise control, a Q2 electronic differential, dual-zone climate control, armrests, fog lights, premium seats, unique 17-inch alloys, and cloth upholstery, Black and Grey fabric seats with a Cannelloni pattern, Alfa’s DNA mode selector, an Alpine 7-inch infotainment screen, DAB Radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice control, a rear view camera with dynamic gridlines, Halogen headlights, a leather wrapped shift knob, a honeycomb front grille, chrome exterior detailing, LED daytime running lights and a leather wrapped steering wheel.
The Giulietta Veloce model is a sexy beast, and items like 18-inch 5 twin-spoke chrome/burnished alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara sports seats with integrated headrests and red stitching, launch control, red Brembo front brake calipers, a special sports suspension, Bi-Xenon headlights, oversized twin exhaust pipes, a sports rear diffuser, a flat bottom steering wheel with red stitching, LED daytime running lights, dark gloss front grille surround, a carbon look headlight cluster, front and rear bumpers with Alfa red pinstripe detail dark gloss side view mirrors, door handles and fog light surrounds, black side window surrounds, privacy glass on rear side windows, dark flair finish dash trim, dashboard contours and door panels with carbon look finishing, a dark headliner are standard; and aluminium sports pedals complete the hot looks.
The latest Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a stylish and sporty small family car that is the sexy alternative to hatchbacks such as Toyota’s Corolla, VW Golf, Ford Focus, Renault Megane, Mazda 3 Hatch, Audi A3, Citroen C4, BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. At the end of each Giulietta journey you’ll get to look back at what you’ve just parked up your driveway with a lot of satisfaction and smugness.
