We’re heading towards 2024 and SUVs are still all the rage, but when you need something more, something exciting, something Italian, you could buy yourself a sexy 2023 Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV. There’s even a special Anniversario model which would really set you up in something boasting plenty of exotic flavour. And that’s just it! Alfa Romeos have got the tang that makes them rousing, an essence that’s sexier, and a savour that satisfies your drive. The Stelvio is an Italian designed SUV with sporty overtones and sensual DNA.
When you get to drive the latest Alfa Romeo Stelvio, you get to enjoy both athleticism and comfort. Special Italian design and premium materials envelope you as you enter the Stelvio’s cabin, giving you the impression that you’re inside a sports car rather than an SUV. The recessed dials and silver trim accents on a leather clad dash look rather special. On the driving side of things, the driver’s positioning is nice and comfortable, with plenty of adjustability in the steering wheel and seat to get you well set up and comfortable for time behind the wheel of your new Stelvio.
Stelvios boast an on-demand 4WD system. The result is an impressive level of grip on any type of road surface. If you want to buy an SUV that drives like a sport car, then the Stelvio will be on your hit list. What I love about the Stelvio SUVs is they are superbly quick and nice to drive, however they are just as happy to potter about town with a low rumble being emitted from the wide exhaust tips. Seat comfort is great, and taller folk will be happy enough with the Stelvio’s interior space in both the front and the rear seats. You also get up to 525 litres of boot space behind the rear seats. Fold these flat, and the space grows immensely.
Aside from the diesel engine only being offered in Europe, both the petrol engines offered in Australia are superb units with plenty of power and responsivity for the racing enthusiast that’s hidden away in each one of us to varying degrees. 206 kW of thrust can be had with the turbocharged 2.0-litre, while a snarling 375 kW of aggression comes with the very fast 2.9 twin-turbo. Let’s just say that neither of these SUVs are slow! But for a more informative answer: the 2.0-litre Stelvio will hit 100 km/h from rest in just 5.7 seconds. The twin-turbo V6 Quadrifoglio with its 510 horses will gallop through the 0-100 km/h dash in just 3.8 seconds.
There is plenty of technology on board too. An 8.8-inch touchscreen is positioned on the top of the dashboard and it meets all your infotainment needs. This screen can also be manually controlled by the driver using a dial by their left hand. You can connect your phone to the system via Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard. Climate air conditioning, an electric boot lid, and electric windows all add to the premium feel.
Standard safety equipment includes parking sensors, rain sensing wipers, radar-guided cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, automatic headlights with an automatic high beam, blind spot monitoring, stability and traction control, front and rear lane departure warning, and a tyre pressure monitoring system. This is pretty comprehensive, the Stelvio also boasting a 5-star safety award from Euro NCAP testing
So what would I rather be driving? An X3, Q5 or Stelvio? A CX-5, CR-V or a Stelvio? A Stelvio all the way!
