Swiftly rounding the bend on a wet drizzly day, and coming into view through weeping willows tossed by the wind, I captured a glimpse of a sleek, black sedan that had a striking front end. Under my umbrella, I continued on my way, musing to myself about what I might have just seen. As I ducked into my favourite delightful little Danish bakery to pick up a honeysweet nut pastry, the thought occurred to me that there could only be one car marque, at present, which would have a triple headlight configuration as stylish as the one I saw. It had to be Alfa Romeo.

My first glimpse of the Alfa Romeo on that cold drizzly day back in May was bought to a magnificent real experience behind the wheel of the sensationally engaging Alfa Romeo 159 Ti 2.2 JTS. Sitting in arguably the best looking sedan on earth was to be a treat never forgotten (and you can get a wagon version). Sensuous interior textures and design make for an Italian cabin that evokes suggestions of another favourite pastime. We all know Italians are sexy… Leather seats that hug the figure and boast side bolsters like that of a racing car offer incredible support. Beautiful leather with a tasteful design is also used on the seats and the door panels. The driving experience is further enhanced with the stylish deeply recessed instruments which are angled towards the driver for pure driving pleasure. The steering wheel is gorgeous to hold and fits snugly in the hands – just like a true driver’s car should. Chrome trim really brings up the steering wheel, dash and centre console beautifully. The black dash is nicely sculptured, and the round air vents that are inserted about the dash are elegant and unique to Alfa. The silver rimmed speedometer and rev counter have a nice red/orange illumination display of engine diagnostics centred between the oval dials. And the onboard entertainment system and control unit looks very nice with its blue display screen and round buttons encircling the monitor. Elegantly poised, and ready for action, is Alfa Romeo’s silver trimmed gear lever that is at the ready for gating back and forwards with the left hand. It’s not that other car makers don’t create nice leather interiors; it’s just that Alfa makes the tailored lace and others make the everyday denims.

Luxury items a-plenty are found inside the Alfa Romeo 159 Ti 2.2. JTS. I enjoyed the eight-speaker clarity of sound that the CD/MP3 compatible unit displayed. The air was fresh coming through a pollen-filtered climate control system, and the armrest in the centre provided a limo like ride in the rear. It is easy to get comfortable in the Alfa Romeo 159 Ti 2.2 JTS cabin. Electric windows and mirrors make driving one of the simple pleasures in life. Cruise control, remote central locking and the handy trip computer are all excellent everyday features too.

Take theAlfa Romeo 159 Ti 2.2 JTS onto a quiet road and open the 136 kW engine up to its fullest potential, and the engine response is sparkling and fluent. The pace is backed up with a predictable grippy chassis that provides instantaneous directional response the way a driver’s car should. And the brakes? They are very strong and capable and make the front wheel drive sedan a real pleasure to live with.
