The front end of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air looks decidedly different. It’s less aggressive than the latest Guilietta or 4C offerings, being somewhat sleeker and smoother. One could almost say thatwith those smooth, rounded lines and the brilliant red, it’s vaguely reminiscent of another thing that says “Italian”: the tomato. That’s if tomatoes come in eye-catching, powerful and sporty like the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air. Mind you, Italians do get as passionate about their food as they do their cars. You could say that the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air is as hot as a puttanesca sauce with extra chilli, smooth as olive oil, as piquant as pesto and as satisfying as freshly baked bread.
Take another look at the front end of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air and you might say that the steep V as the bonnet leads down into the front grille, plus the curves of the bumpers and the round headlights, and the voluptuous coupé styling at the rear have been inspired by another fundamental physical pleasure of the flesh… But that’s quite enough of that. Let’s stick to cooking metaphors.
As anyone who has ever handled chilli peppers knows, small things are often very potent indeed. This is certainly true of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air. It’s got one of the smaller engines in the MiTo lineup: a mere 0.9 L (if you want to be more precise, 875 cc). However, this little unit has certainly got the pepper. It has the pepper in the form of 77 kW of power and 145 Nm of torque (giving the pepper pot a bit of a twist to turn up the heat, perhaps?). Couple that up to the front wheels via the 6-speed manual transmission and you have a recipe for fun. This engine is what gives the Twin Air its name, as it’s a two-cylinder turbo charged affair with timed sequential multipoint electronic injection with knock control. Although this has a top speed of 184 km/h, it has super-frugal fuel economy figures, managing to do 5 L/100 km around town, 3.8 L/100 km in the country and 4.2 L/100 km combined. No, this is not an electric vehicle and it’s not a hybrid – it’s not a motorbike, either! But with fuel consumption figures like that, you might make that mistake.
Other key features of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air, apart from its ability to provide an entertaining drive on hardly any juice, include fun exterior features like a rear spoiler, 15-inch alloy wheels, a chrome-plated exhaust pipe and titanium grey taillight and headlight surrounds (which really show off the beautiful round lights). Inside, standard features that are bound to please include the leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio and phone controls, the lumbar support in the front seat, the climate control and the cruise control. Driver aids inside the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air include the VDC system, which incorporates Hill Holder, ABS brakes, ASR, brake assist, MSR and CBC. Information is provided via a 5-inch touch screen display, which also works in with the Bluetooth hands-free kit, voice controls for the audio system and an audio system with the works (radio, MP3, USB input and auxiliary input).
Safety-wise, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air is well equipped with airbags wherever you need them, which is as important for a small, fast car as salt is to cooking. Specifically, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air is equipped with driver’s knee bag, and front and side airbags. A seatbelt reminder system and a dynamic steering system also do their bit to keep the driver safe as well as very happy.
All in all, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Twin Air is a car that combines fun and flair with frugality. The combination of traditional Italian pizzazz with a tiny engine is delightful. Because who said that small cars that are easy on the petrol have to be boring?
