Quality cars have loads of things going for them, but add some Italian flair and performance, and the car gets a whole lot more exciting. New for 2016 is Alfa’s new Giulietta Series 2 hatchback. More performance, more refinement and better technology keeps this well-priced hatch at the top of its game.
Glance over the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta Series 2 bodywork and there’s not a huge difference between the appearance of the Series 1 and Series 2. However, the sporty front end now has some unique LED daytime running lights and a honeycomb grille – more in keeping with the raw Giulia QV. Signature LED lights now grace the rear. This car also boasts increased equipment, so all versions have a leather steering wheel, air-conditioning, the fun D.N.A driving mode selector and the Uconnect Live infotainment system. Some new upholstery options make their way into various models, while some new alloy wheel designs pretty the car up even further.
Probably, one of the pick improvements we found in the new Series 2 Alfa Giulietta was the addition of the Uconnect system on all models. This move has certainly helped keep the Giulietta as well equipped as other rivals and better than some others, too. So you get to enjoy the Uconnect system even in the Super Manual base model. Driven through a responsive five-inch touchscreen, the instinctual menu system has big, clear graphics that are easy to understand. DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity are built into the unit. If you want to, you can upgrade the system to the Tecnica trim which will give you the satellite navigation, voice recognition and a more impressive 6.5-inch touchscreen.
I love the way the cabin looks. The interior instrument fascia is eye-catching, with round dials and switchgear gracing the smooth dash. The instrument cluster is classy, audio quality is good, and it’s easy to get yourself rocking to some funky new Spotify tunes. Taking some time to run home the long way reveals that the chassis is up to some fun driving through the twisty roads. Power is good, and the car accelerates with a flexible and punchy response. It’s a FWD hatch, and when it comes to fun, the Giulietta has it in spades. The car stays flat and exhibits plenty of grip in the corners. Some might say that the ride is a little firm – but then I’d take the fun-factor over comfort on this occasion.
So, the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta is doing it tough against some good stiff competition. Mazda 3, Honda’s new Civic Turbo, the Ford Focus, Audi A3 and BMW has some top notch drives. The best looking of all of these, however, is the Giulitta. Let’s take a look at the models.
Starting with the new Alfa Romeo Giuletta Super Manual for under $30k and you have yourself a hatch with a sprightly 1.4 MultiAir Turbo 110kW/230Nm engine. The fun factor is magnified with the tight six-speed manual transmission and snazzy 16-inch alloy wheels. You’ll also get some great equipment that includes dual zone climate control, rear parking sensors, a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, rain sensing wipers and Alfa’s DNA Selector.
Next in line is the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Super TCT. More power is stroked out of the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo engine, so here you have 125kW and 250Nm to play with. The six-speed Twin Clutch Transmission is a pleasure to use. More grip comes in the form of 17-inch alloy wheels. The Super TCT gets front and rear parking sensors to make things easy for the wife – I mean those who find it difficult to park in tight spaces. There is the upgraded 6.5-inch Uconnect RadioNav system, a leather wrapped shift knob and a leather wrapped steering wheel.
At the top of the tree sits the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce. Some serious fun can be had here with the very responsive and quick 1.8-litre Turbo 177kW/340Nm engine. A 0- 100 km/h sprint can be completed in a little over six seconds. Power is put through a slick six-speed Twin Clutch Transmission, and the Veloce sits on 18-inch alloy wheels. A powerful Brembo braking system with sporty red brake calipers, and a sports suspension and sports body kit, keeps you in control when the speeds heat up. The Veloce also comes with carbon look headlamps, Bi-xenon headlamps, glossy anthracite exterior trim, privacy tinted glass, a sports exhaust, leather and Alcantara sports seats, steel pedals, a sports steering wheel with red stitching and a grunty nine-speaker Bose sound system. The optional Veloce pack offers 18-Inch black 5-hole alloy wheels for even more showiness.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta has been awarded a prestigious five-star Euro NCAP rating. Get driving a new Alfa Romeo Giuletta and you get the excellent 3-year/150,000km warranty as standard. Enjoy!
