Long wheel base cars are reserved for a limousine business, the rich, taxis and those of us who delight in superior room and comfort.
New from Audi is the large and luxurious Audi A8 L. Having an extra few inches in the length of a car makes all the difference when leg room and comfort counts.
Only the best materials and features are found on-board the Audi A8 L, and they need to be because this machine competes directly with the BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ and Mercedes Benz S-Class long wheelbase versions. Audi’s rivals are very good at what they do, but I think Audi’s flavour will appeal to many – as it has done for me.
Enter into the new Audi A8 L world, and seat comfort reigns supreme. Sitting back in fine Nappa leather seats, watching a DVD in the rear of the A8 L and sipping on a chilled drink is nothing short of kingly.
Yes, the new Audi A8 L has plenty of get-up-and-go with its range of powerful petrol and diesel engines (3.0-litre TFSI, 4.0-litre TFSI and 4.0-litre TDI). But I guess if performance was all that mattered, then you wouldn’t be driving the L version anyhow. Whatever engine hauls the luxo A8 L along, you can be very sure that the cabin remains whisper quiet at all speeds. Holding a conversation without having to rise above the road noise is one of the experiences you’ll find novel – that is, of course, if you aren’t already well accustomed to travelling in flagship limousines.
This flagship A8 L model has been updated to keep step with the latest launch from the Mercedes Benz S-Class. Like the S-Class limo, the new Audi A8 L has a simpler feel about the dash and controls. Smooth curves and plenty of fascia panels void of complicated buttons provide a relaxed tone to the A8 L cabin. The pop-up touch screen sits up in the centre of the dash and is capable of accessing and controlling just about everything that the A8 L has for entertainment, luxury, car dynamics, travel info and comfort.
Depending on whether you consider yourself lucky to be driving or to be chauffeured in the rear, whichever floats your boat, the rear of the A8 L is something very special. You are seated in your own seating space, right or left of the centre space in the rear seats. The central zone houses all the control dials you require for entertainment – whether that be audio, visual or cabin temperature – to name a few. You can also access refreshments in the refrigerated rear seat compartments. The Audi A8 L has individual seating heater controls.
Some of the more notable changes to the car are found in the slimmer detailing on the exterior. The car looks trimmer, and the headlight and taillights are more streamlined – a change I think is a positive one. The cars’ overall height has decreased making it more slippery through the air. A singular low air intake now stretches across the width of the car. Customers now have a choice of xenon, LED, or Matrix LED headlights.
One of the exterior design features at the rear of the vehicle is that the trimmer taillights are restyled, now connected by a horizontal strip of chrome – very classy.
Along with updates in the engines, Audi have also made some positive changes to safety features. They have tweaked the Active Lane Assist feature -a very good safety enhancement to stop you wandering into other lanes. Like BMWs, the new Audi A8 L also comes standard with head-up display.
Audi’s A8 L is a beautiful car, ready for the road and ready to impress. The current Audi A8 L model series includes the:
