2022 Audi A5 Hatch

“Form is temporary, but class is forever” is a phrase often vocalized by commentators in the sporting environment.  One player on form and always classy is Audi’s sporty A5, and the latest offering is the sweetly designed 2022 Audi A5 Hatch.  This is a particularly talented performer that is loaded with luxury and delivers a hatchback experience with practicality and grace.

Two versions of the new A5 Hatch are available and they are keenly priced, particularly when pitched directly against other high-end alternatives like the Kia Stinger, Volvo S60, BMW 4 series or Genesis G70.  Two 2.0-litre Turbo petrol power plants are offered, one being a 140 kW/320 Nm job and the other being the slightly quicker 183 kW/370 Nm version.  Both feel light and nimble on their feet, the big difference being that the more powerful A5 45 TFSI offers AWD, a skill that keeps it more settled in the wet and in slippery conditions.  The 140 kW Audi A5 40 TFSI Hatch sends its power to the front wheels only.  For all intents and purposes, and for most drivers, the 40 TFSI doesn’t really feel that it lacks anything by not having AWD, though the drivers pushing hard will like the added grip that comes with the 45 TFSI’s AWD.

Both engines deliver good fuel economy: the seven-speed sports automatic gearbox doing an excellent job of keeping the progress as responsive and as efficient as possible. Audi claim the A5 40 TFSI will average 6.5 litres/100 km and the A5 45 TFSI 7.1 litres/100 km.  On another day-to-day note, the Audi A5 Hatch can happily pull a 750 kg unbraked trailer with ease or an unbraked trailer up to 1500 kg for the 40 TFSI and 1700 kg for the AWD A45 TFSI.  Boot space for the new A5 Sportback Hatch comes in at 480 litres with the rear seats in place and 1300 litres with the seats folded down.

Pricing comes in well under $100k for both, the 40 TFSI being bought new for less than $90k and the 45 TFSI a little over that mark.  It could be seen as pricey compared to most of its competitors but this is a premium product.  The two Australian models are S Line models, so there is a fair bit of kit that comes with it.  The new Audi A5 Hatch S Line models are luxurious, thanks to a wide range of standard features that include high-quality leather, illuminated entry/exit, active cruise control, a premium 10-speaker audio system with digital radio, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, wireless phone connection, integrated navigation, assisted self-parking, heated headlight washer jets, hill hold assist, a powered tailgate, Aux Inputs, USB Sockets, Inputs for iPods, a subwoofer, electric seats (heated in the 45 FSI), multi-zone climate control,  and a panoramic sunroof.

255/35 R19 rubber gives the new Audi A5 Hatch a commanding hold on the road.  Both models deliver exciting performance, crisp steering, and a quality ride.  The more powerful A5 45 TFSI Hatch has a few more horses for galloping quickly past slower moving vehicles, though, to be fair, the standard FWD model is a sweet performer and always ready for making full use of the 140 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque available.  Commendably quiet at high speeds, the new A5 Hatch covers the miles effortlessly.

Around town, the A5’s ride is comfortable, and the car is easy to swing in and out of those tight spaces.  Active technology keeps you from running into anything that happens to come out in front of you, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Interior comfort and space impresses, with excellent leg room available for tall folk in both front and rear seats.  You do feel that you’re driving something more than special in the new Audi cars.  Though you will find that there are one or two options out there like Honda’s Accord, Toyota’s Camry, or even Mazda’s 6 that are lighter on the wallet when purchasing new, the drive will be worth it for many car-buyers looking for a luxurious and spacious sports hatchback.  One to enjoy!
