It’s 2022 and time has travelled onwards, giving the space for Audi’s team to grow the e-tron into the models we can buy today. In Australia, the Audi e-tron SUV is a pure electric luxury SUV that can be bought north of $150k new and comes in three trim levels: 50, 55, and S. We’ll also be able to get the e-tron as an EV sedan, shortly.
So, when you buy a new Audi e-tron SUV, you’ll also get a 5 year/unlimited km warranty and a 6 year roadside assistance package as part of the new car deal. Of course, being an electric vehicle (EV) there won’t be anywhere near the level of servicing that an ICE vehicle requires, so things like oil and coolant changes won’t be necessary in the EV world.
Weighing in at over 2.5 tonnes, the Audi e-tron is no featherweight. These are hefty, mainly a result of the lithium battery packs and stronger body construction. The e-tron SUV seats five people comfortably, and the ride quality is superb, the weight aiding the smooth ride. Combined with an adjustable suspension, the latest Audi e-tron brings its A-game and feels light, agile and superbly smooth and in control for all occasions. A useful spec for this luxury electric SUV is that, if needed, you will be able to tow a 750 kg unbraked trailer or an 1800 kg braked trailer.
Occupants will enjoy the serene cabin environment and elegant interior styling. A Bang & Olufsen stereo is part of the top ‘S’ model’s repertoire and sounds gloriously magnificent, however even true music talents will still appreciate the grunt and clarity of the 50 and 55’s DAB+ 10-speaker stereo system with its own subwoofer.
Occupants in the new Audi e-tron will also be well-protected. ANCAP has crash tested the Audi e-tron 50 and e-tron 55 models and given them a full 5-star safety rating. All the big ticket safety kit is there, so 8 airbags, ABS, brake assist, an electric park brake, regenerative braking, electronic stability control, traction control, collision warning and crash avoidance systems, blind spot sensors, cross traffic alert, driver attention detection, a first aid kit, active lane keeping assist, parking assistance that is fully automated and with a graphical display, and driver fatigue warning find their way inside. The e-tron’s park assist uses a 360 degree camera surveillance, so boasts ‘vision’ right around the entire space of the car. In the unlikely event of a severe crash, the body shell is very strong and cocoons its occupants.
The 2022 Audi e-tron uses a 1-speed reduction gear system. The cheapest version of the e-tron is around $150k and packs 230 kW of power and 540 Nm of torque. Two electric motors power all four wheels. Audi claim the luxury SUV can run for around 400 km before needing a top up. Given the right charging unit, it can be fully charged in 30 minutes.
Next in line comes the Audi e-tron 55 producing 300 kW of power and 664 Nm of torque. “S” stands for Sport, and the 2022 Audi e-tron S comes with the biggest output (370 kW and 808 Nm). That’s quite a punch.
Even though all of the new e-trons come with plenty of power, they are limited to a top speed of 210 km/h. To give you an idea of how quick they are, well the S model completers the 0-100 km/h in around 4.5 seconds.
The Audi e-tron looks very smart and premium and comes riding on 20 or 21-inch wheels. Full of all the latest technology from wireless phone charging to an array of Aux inputs and USB sockets for other mobile devices. The matrix LED headlights are pretty impressive at night, while flick the car into reverse, and the “virtual” rear-view cameras that display images on the dash screen are a cool feature. GPS satellite navigation is standard, as is the powered tailgate.
The Audi e-tron S models gets a few extra bells and whistles like a bigger 16-speaker surround sound system, a head up information display, tyre pressure monitoring, 4-zone climate control, and a heated steering wheel, to name a few. And if you want some more optional extras, then Audi do provide them. Upgrades like 22-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels with a 5-arm-interference design in titanium grey are available. A 22kW AC Charging Package can be had for around $6,900. A black exterior styling package that includes black roof rails and gloss black mirror caps will have you looking pretty special at a small price, as will carbon inlays with a striking square design. You can have your doors power assisted for around $1,500, or your headlamps with high beam active shadowing. Virtual exterior mirrors, I have to say, are another mod optional extra.
Keep your eyes out for the new Audi e-tron GT sedans. These EVs will be available alongside the current Audi e-tron SUVs.
