The quickest in the Audi A3 stables is the brand new RS3 Hatch or RS3 Sedan – take your pick. Choosing between the new RS3 Hatch and Sedan will come down to your own tastes and preferences, along with a pinch of sensibility in the form of practicality. Both sedans and hatchbacks have their own pros, though both of these new RS3 versions only differ behind the rear wheels; everything else is the same. Ultimately, the little RS3 Hatch is a little more spacious than the sedan in that it can fit larger items in through the rear gate entrance. Both models have split-folding rear seats.
What’s the main differences between a standard Audi A3 or even an S3 and the stonking little RS3? As well as boasting a wider track and wider fenders, the RS3’s engine has an extra cylinder over the other 4-cylinder varieties. It also has a more sophisticated version of the Quattro all-wheel-drive fitted to it with new torque vectoring dialled into the mix, which all makes it a phenomenal small performance car.
More on the engine… With a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of less than 4 seconds, the 2022 Audi RS3 is a true small supercar. You can run up to a limited top speed of 250 km/h in standard RS3 guise. But you can also opt for the RS Dynamic Package, gaining even more unleashed velocity. With the limiter removed, the RS3 Sedan and Hatch have 290 km/h top speed potential.
What lies under the bonnet is a heavily-tuned 2.5-litre 5-cylinder Turbo petrol motor. Boasting outputs of 294 kW and 500 Nm, you can start to see how this little pocket rocket can deliver such scintillating acts. It is truly a sensational car to drive, and the speed and acceleration is backed up with very strong braking capacity as well as phenomenal levels of grip. Steering accuracy is wonderfully precise, and the car sits sweetly through fast corners and high speed straits. This Audi RS3 recipe is award winning, and has its owners and drivers raving. The new RS3 comes with a slick 7-speed sports automatic transmission, and Audi’s fabulous Quattro AWD system that boasts a new rear differential.
Safety is a serious matter, and Audi kit the new RS3 out with all the big ticket safety items. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with torque vectoring, a rear view camera, front driver and passenger airbags, front side airbags, front side guard head airbags, front passenger airbag deactivation detection, crash avoidance systems, ISOFIX child seat anchorages both front and rear, safety shells, adaptive cruise control assist with an emergency take over assist system, lane changing assist with an exit warning system and rear cross traffic alert system leading the charge. The 2022 Audi A3 range, which the new RS3 is based on, carries a 5-star ANCAP safety rating (from 2020).
Don’t get too concerned about other people nicking it, as the 2022 Audi RS3 Sedan and Hatch does come with a comprehensive anti-theft alarm with interior surveillance and vehicle immobiliser systems. Some of the other goodies a new RS3 Audi provides is drive mode selection, damper control and adjustment, parking assist, high beam assist, 19-inch alloy wheels in a 10-spoke Y-style, an RS sports exhaust, red brake callipers, privacy glass, a high gloss styling package, heated and electrically adjustable wing mirrors, LED headlights and LED dynamic taillights, Slimline roof rails, and an electric tail gate.
At night, the new RS3 provides a door entrance light, with the RS logo projected onto the ground for front seat occupants. Ambient interior lighting can be set to an array of different colours and schemes. This makes for quite the entry.
Sitting inside a 2022 Audi RS3 is as good as sitting inside an RS5 or any of the larger RS versions. The interior is finely detailed and exquisitely made. Attention to detail is first rate – fine nappa-leather upholstery embossed with an Audi RS logo, and even a stylish honeycomb stitching is present over the seats. The scuff plates are illuminated up with the RS logo. The front seats are electrically adjustable and even heated, while the driver’s seat has its own memory function. Both the front seats have a 4-way lumbar support system, and the interior inlays are made of carbon fibre. The steering wheel has full adjustment forward and back, up and down.
Audi provides the RS3 with its excellent new navigation and infotainment plus system, and the wireless smartphone interface is simple and easy to use. AUX-IN and 2 USB ports are also present should you require these. Audi RS3 versions (Sedan and Hatch) have a grunty sound system with 10 speakers that include a centre speaker in the dashboard and even a subwoofer. The total audio system output boasts 180 watts of crystal clear quality. Two-zone automatic climate control keeps the cabin temperature set just right, and Audi’s latest virtual cockpit Plus boasts the big 12.3-inch screen and an additional RS runway layout which looks very cool. On a more practical not, keyless entry and start, along with split-folding 40:20:40 rear seats make living with this well-equipped pocket rocket all the more likable on a daily basis.
Yes, the 2022 Audi RS3 Hatch or Sedan can both be driven slowly about town and at a dawdling pace. In traffic the wee rocket is well-behaved, quiet, and comfortable. The car is made to be driven though, even with all its hot looks. After all, the tyres are 265 mm wide at the front and 245 mm wide at the rear, giving this small Hatch/Sedan, with its Quattro underpinnings, a totally commanding hold over the road.
The current Audi RS3 Hatch and Sedan models include the:
