2024 Audi A5 Coupe

In the latter half of 2024, Audi have released a very tasty new coupe, updating its well-known A5 range.  It’s certainly a very lovely and highly desirable city car with style and substance.

We can’t show photos of the 2024 Audi A5 Coupe for copyright reasons, even though we’d like to.  So I’ll do my best to describe it… or you can go down to your local dealers and check it out in the metal, from the LED headlights with the works through to the chrome-trimmed tailpipes at the back.  My first impression was that it looks smooth and a little bit edgy, combining that classic coupe roofline with modern tailored details that blend subtle curves with dynamic diagonals.  The Matrix LED headlights are super-bright and have the works, including automatic range control – you’ll certainly see this coming but, fortunately, the Matrix technology can pick oncoming vehicles and dim the lights just where that vehicle is, while illuminating the sides of the road and the lane ahead.  (Here, as someone who likes to walk at night, remember that you’ll see pedestrians but the lights on full beam will dazzle the pedestrians, so could you please dip the lights manually in this situation? Thank you!)  The front honeycomb grille dominates the bonnet, along with the daytime running lights.  However, if you’re looking for big air intakes, you’ll find that these have been veiled by more of the honeycomb accents, which is a pleasingly subtle touch. In terms of the colour choices, the standard options are there (black, two types of white, light grey and red), along with a very trendy darker grey, a distinctive olive green and a navy blue known as “Navarra blue” (nothing to do with the Nissan Navarra, even though I once owned a Navarra in a similar shade of blue).

It’s not a tall car – coupés generally aren’t – as it stands at 1.371 metres on its  19-inch alloy wheels.  This means that the roof is exactly the right height to rest your coffee cup on, at least at the front of the car before the quintessential sloping lie of the roof begins (don’t forget to pick your cup up and put it in one of the cupholders before you go – it would be a shame to dirty the paintwork or to waste a perfectly good cappuccino).  All the same, the headspace is reasonably good, with a maximum of 1 m from the cushy leather-upholstered front seat cushion to the roof, with those in the back getting 92 cm.  As you may have figured out from the maths, this means that you’ve got a low seating position so that you can really enjoy the experience of classic Audi performance.  This is emphasised by the sports front seats with their side bolsters and the extendable thigh support – and they’re heated as well.  Boot space isn’t enormous, but it’s been maximized by providing a space saver tyre, and by the fact that the rear seat has a 40:60 split fold.

Those who do a lot of city driving will be pleased to know that the 2024 Audi A5 Coupe is powered by mild hybrid technology, which means that around town, the 12-volt battery system will take care of getting from A to B.  The ICE part of the mild hybrid powerplant is on the smaller size, being a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a capacity of around 2 L, producing a nicely frugal fuel economy stat of 7.1 l/100 km combined driving. To get technical, the engine is capable of 183 kW at 5000–6500 rpm, whereas in the torque department, this little unit delivers a juicy 370 Nm across the full range 1600–4500 rpm. This allows this smooth coupe to dart through the 0–100 km/h dash in 5.8 s when hooked up to the seven-speed automatic transmission and Audi’s famous quattro drivetrain. Five driving modes are on offer, allowing you to customize things to suit your style.

Inside, the interior trim has aluminium details that contrast nicely with the glossy black accents.  However, what you’re most likely to notice first is the multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel with the paddle shifters that sits in front of the screen known as Audi’s virtual cockpit.  The virtual cockpit in the 2024 Audi A5 Coupe has a full-colour 12-inch customizable instrument panel, and it’s complemented by the heads-up display and the navigation display console, which is a 10-inch touchscreen affair that has handwriting recognition software (although I’m wondering when and how you could put this to amusing use – what fun!); however, if you don’t want to use the touchscreen or handwriting, voice control is also there.  However, you’re much more likely to use this with the 360-degree cameras when manoeuvring and parking – if you don’t want to use the parking assistance function.  The infotainment system plays nicely with both Apple and Android’s in-car apps and talks to your phone via Bluetooth, and pumps out your latest audiobook, podcast or playlist via the 10-speaker sound system that’s capable of putting out a good 180 watts.  Wireless charging for your phone is available, if you don’t want to make use of one (or more) of the four USB charging ports (two in the back and two in the front).

Other features of the 2024 Audi A5 Coupe won’t be noticed until you get started (using the keyless entry and engine start function).  These include the full suite of driver aids, including the city pre-sense function that applies autonomous emergency braking and detects pedestrians, the front collision sensors that apply emergency braking even at the top (limited) speed of 250 km/h, the rear pre-sense function that can detect when some fool is about to rear-end you and kicks in with crash mitigation measures, attention assistance, a comprehensive electronic stability control package (ABS braking, torque control, EDL and brake assistance), hill hold, rear cross-traffic alert, parking assistance, lane keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring and warning, and my very favourite driver aid: adaptive cruise control.
