After admiring the clean Audi S1 Sportback lines, you enter the interior of what is Audi’s smallest hatch. And, I have to admit that I like the elegant impression of the classy Germanic interior. If you are in the hunt for a fast, luxurious small hatch, then the new Audi S1 Sportback provides a lot of zip, a nice ride quality and plenty of top features.
One of the special features of the new Audi S1 Sportback is the grippy quattro four-wheel drive underpinnings and the powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This has to be rated as one of the hottest superminis available. From my perspective, the blend of speed and stability that the S1 Sportback offers stamps this little race-away with the reviewer’s mark of approval. Yes, there are the competitors like the Mini John Cooper Works, the Volkswagen Polo GTi, the Renault Clio Sport and the BMW M135i. However, none of these can run hard with the added traction that the Quattro system provides. The Audi S1 Sportback can dispatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in a very fast 5.8 seconds. The 2.0-litre TFSI petrol-fed engine is the star of the show, and it is linked to a light but slick six-speed manual gearbox. There is no automatic option. The Audi S1 Sportback keeps its performance in check with reasonably good fuel economy. You can expect around 7 litres/100 km of fuel usage. That’s not bad considering the level of performance on offer.
If you need extra room, the little S1 Sportback can fold the rear seats down flat for swallowing plenty of luggage (860 litres). When the rear seats are in place and occupied, the boot space is small (210 litres), but it is still useful for carrying enough gear for the weekend away or a set of golf clubs. The seats are best equipped for carrying four occupants in style. Front seat occupants will have no complaints about room and comfort levels; however, the space in the rear seats is a little tight for the leggy adult. Perhaps, the S1 Sportback is best suited to one or two occupants or a small family, but if you need the bigger space you’ll look for the bigger car. What you get in the new Audi S1 Sportback is a tenaciously fast and rewarding drive that you’ll love time-after-time.
Audi’s cabin is also one of the best quality cabins in the business, particularly in its class. It feels expensive and boasts top features for making the drive relaxed and comfortable. There are metal controls for the multimedia and heating systems, as well as half-leather seats, climate control, Bluetooth, a DAB radio and Audi’s MMI infotainment feature – which are all standard features.
You’ll be looking great in an understated Audi sort-of-way, with aluminium mirrors, extended side sills, a boot spoiler and smart 17-inch alloys. The quad tailpipes at the back are what really gives the game away that this really is a quick hot-hatch with loads of performance potential. Standard xenon lights with striking LED running lamps and a bold grille give the new S1 Sportback a distinctive expression. There is a range of bright, bold colours that will keep the heads turning in your direction.
As with any of the Audi models, the new S1 Sportback is a safe car to drive. Even the standard Audi A1 is up there with the safest cars in its class. It comes with six airbags, ESP, Isofix child seat anchor points, and even sealant foam to repair a punctured tyre.
There’s no doubt you’ll find yourself hitting from corner to corner far faster than you’d expect for any half-decent small hot-hatch; and that’s what the S1 Sportback is all about. It is the hot supermini, and maybe that’s what the ‘S’ in S1 really means!
