There are numerous ways of flavouring potato chips, my favourite being salt and vinegar. There are also a variety of models that you can have the BMW 4 Series in, my favourite being the 4-door version. The new 4 Series that has been released in 2021 can be had in a Coupe, Convertible, and in a four door version. The 4-door version of the 4 Series has sometimes been referred to as the Gran Coupe and just recently I’ve seen it called a Hatch. I have no idea why you’d call any larger BMW model a Hatch, as it just doesn’t sound suave enough for a BMW nor appear visually similar to a dinky wee hatchback! However, the tailgate is a hatchback type, so you have plenty of room to put your luggage inside the new 4-Series Hatch boot space. That slipped out! Split folding rear seats mean that if no one is sitting in the rear seats, they can be folded flat to accommodate lengthy cargo or even just a whole lot more cargo. This is an awesome car for the long weekend.
Definitely don’t make the mistake and think that the new BMW 4 Series 4-door is anything cheap or less desirable than it is, because when you drive, let alone look, at a 2021 4-Series 4-door it oozes quality and style from every angle and in each driving experience.
What I like about the 4-door version of the 4-Series BMW is that it keeps the gorgeous lines of the Coupe while adding the rear doors. Those nice athletic lines are still there, but with the extra two doors this is the most practical 4-Series by far. It’s easy to slip in-and-out of the rear seats with the wide opening rear door. Once inside, the rear seats are very comfortable, and the leather upholstered material is stunningly crafted with patterns and accentuated stitching. The seats will even recline slightly for added comfort and relaxation.
You can seat three across the back, however life is best when there is just the two of you there, being chauffeured. You can then pop the centre arm rest down between you both and park your drink in the cup holders and plug in your electronic devices for a great travelling experience. I love to drive, but when you do share the driving, doing part of a roadie in the back seats of a 4-Series isn’t that bad. If you’re a tall adult, life in the middle seat will be tight when the full three are occupied. This is mainly down to the drivetrain tunnel protruding into your leg space.
For 2021 the BMW 4 Series models have that stunningly bold grille at the front, while the headlight design is more streamlined. I love the car’s face; it’s a bit meaner and in your face while still having an air of charm and elegance with its low slung lines.
Inside the new 4-door 4-Series BMW, the driver is cosseted in a lovely cushioned, supportive sports/luxury seat. Premium models offer both front seats with electronic adjustment and cooling/heating controls. Across the dash there is that familiar suave and sexy dash design that is simply beautiful. Chrome and black panelling add class to give the car a justified upmarket feel. Centre stage on the dash is an updated and larger clear touch-infotainment screen with loads of cool apps/features that you can control via touch or with the round dial on the centre console – in the way that many BMWs have done so before. This is an easy way of scrolling through and selecting the features you want and of course don’t want. The driver gets a digital display that is classy when in action. At night the switchgear lights up nicely across the dash, looking elegant.
In the standard new BMW 4 Series 4-door models you get a nice set of 19 or 20-inch alloy wheels, premium leather seats, BMW Connected Drive, satellite navigation, awesome LED headlights, LED tail lights, front and rear parking sensors and of course that desirable ultimate driving experience. Luxury Edition 420i models get a glass powered sunroof, metallic paintwork, comfort access to the cabin and boot space, as well as heated front seats.
M Sport models brim with sporty body kits and ‘M’ logos inside and out. You can kit the base models out with some of the racier trim that the M Sport models get as standard. The bigger, more powerful engines, sporty exterior detailing, and a stiffer sport tuned suspension are part of the quicker M Sport’s arsenal.
Three models are available, starting off with the BMW 420i M Sport which boasts the BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder petrol engine with 135 kW and 300 Nm. Thanks to the close ratio gearbox with paddle shifters and modern turbine technology, the 420i can still scamper through the 0-100 km/h dash in under eight seconds. Expect fuel economy to be good, because it is, and you’ll be able to average around 6.5 litres/100 km.
Next comes the 430i M Sport which offers a tweaked version of the same engine found in the 420i. However, power jumps to 190 kW, torque rises to 400 Nm and the 0-100 time lowers to considerably.
It’s the BMW M440i xDrive that will really mangle a track. Boasting BMW’s potent TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder 3.0-litre petrol engine with 285 kW and 500 Nm you are in for a quick ride. Surprisingly frugal when loping along the highway at legal limits, this engine will burst into life the instant you put your foot down. 0-100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds!
There is no need to be apprehensive about pushing any of the 4-Series 4-door models to their limits; the cars have awesome control, and the grip levels are superb. Not only does the car have outstanding acceleration but the 4-door 4 Series stops quick too, thanks to the clever braking technology on-board.
A two-door Coupe, a Convertible and a 4-Door model (Hatch!) make up the BMW 4-Series variants. With this sort of choice, you can be sure that you’ll be looking your best when turning up at the party. The 2021 BMW 4 Series 4-Door (Gran Coupe) is the icing on the cake, having that extra glamour and elegance, along with its practicality. This is the model I’d like to have.
