One to look out for in 2022 is the presence of the BMW 128ti on our roads. This has all the hallmarks of being a great BMW where all the good bits are in one package. Decent performance, decent comfort, the right amount of technology to aid the drive, and the practicality available to take passengers and luggage when needed.
A look over the exterior picks up a few model-specific features that set the sporty 128ti Hatch off nicely from the other models in the line-up. It is a hatchback, and who doesn’t like driving a good one of these? This is a compact car that has good levels of passenger space, that big rear tailgate that lifts up in typical hatchback fashion, and a functional luggage space with split folding rear seats. With that in mind, the 2022 BMW 128ti gets special little things like a kidney grille that has been coloured in high-gloss black, an extended shadow line around the grille, high-gloss black wing mirrors, BMW Individual headlights with a shadow line and a darker tone, M-Sport features with red surrounds on the front and rear air curtains and side skirts, and exclusive 18-inch Y-spoke light alloy wheels. Just in front of the rear wheel arch you’ll see a red “ti” logo. The result is a fine looking sporty hatchback, perfect for the small family.
Fun is at the core of the 128ti, so, when you open the door and climb inside the car’s cabin, the interior exudes a stylish racy feel, much more so than the standard 1-Series Hatchbacks. There is red contrast stitching for the arm rests, the door trim, the airbag cover, the steering wheel rim, and the instrument panel. The 128ti comes standard with very supportive front sports seats with red accents. In the rear, you’ll also notice the lovely bright red accents on the back rests. Planted in the middle of the front centre armrest is a “ti” logo stitched into the surface, red – of course.
Driving the new BMW 128ti is delightful. There is plenty of response from the engine, and the handling is impeccable, light, and easy to control. The car comes with a specially tuned M suspension, and the FWD comes with a limited-slip differential for controlling the power in slippery situations. Sitting on Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, the 2022 BMW 128ti cracks along nicely and feels quick and entertaining. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic flicks through the gears neatly and there always is the right amount of power delivered for a spirited drive. You’ll come away from a drive in the 128ti Hatch with a smile on your face.
The 2.0-litre engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology develops 195 kW. The 128ti cracks 100 km/h from a standstill in 6 seconds and will run on to a top speed of 250 km/h. A combined fuel consumption sees less than 7 litres/100 km, so in old school terms the 128ti is capable of around 45 mpg. CO2 emissions are around 148 g/km.
The three main fives are present in BMW’s 128ti Hatch that are what you want as standard; these are 5 door practicality, a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, and 5 decent seats. This new ti model breathes new life into a long tradition at BMW. Since the 1960s the “ti” badge has stood for “Turismo Internazionale” and marks out particularly sporty models. Special BMW cars with the “ti” logo included the BMW 1800 TI and BMW 2002 TI to the BMW 323ti Compact and BMW 325ti Compact of the late 1990s.
The latest BMW 128ti is, in essence, a European Hyundai 130 N, a sporty Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic Hatch. Though more expensive than these, it does feel very well built and has that typical solid feel and quality that you get on BMW, Audi and Mercedes Benz Hatchbacks. It is an unfiltered driving machine with a distinctive character and comes across as the perfect compact Sports Hatch that is focused squarely on highly engaging driving pleasure.
