Driving the brand new BMW 5 Series is quiet, luxurious and distinctive. Perfection takes time to accomplish, and with every new generation of BMW 5 Series the refinement and performance of each new model is developed that little bit more. Every car manufacturer has a diesel model in the mix, and it’s no different with BMW. You’ll find the 520d and the 530d are exceptional motor cars with plenty of comfort, power and luxury.
Let’s start with the new BMW 520d. Powered by a BMW TwinPower Turbo, the inline 4-cylinder diesel engine is exceptionally smooth and efficient. Thanks to the 8-speed automatic transmission the gear changes are slick and very refined, enabling the engine to produce optimum torque for every situation. When a quick spurt of acceleration is needed, the 520d powers down nicely and can really move when needed. There is 400 Nm of torque available from very low down in the engine revs, while the 140 kW power output is healthy for slick driving. A 0-100 km/h sprint time of eight seconds is sharp timing. The Steptronic gearbox also comes with paddle shifters, so it can be quite enjoyable taking control of BMW’s energetic small diesel motor.
For huge levels of pulling power and speed, the 2017 BMW 530d knows how to deliver a memorable drive filled with satisfaction and pleasure. This exciting sports/luxury saloon is powered by the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine that has an inline 6-cylinder formation. Power output for this motor is a thrilling 195 kW. That figure alone packs some punch, however when this is matched with a huge amount of torque at an instant (620 Nm), the BMW 530d is sensational. A 0-100 km/h dash is blitzed in less than 6 seconds. Like the 520d, the 530d applies the power to the road via an 8-speed auto box, however with all this power the transmission has been strengthened to cope with the higher torque levels and is known as an 8-speed sport automatic transmission. It is also a Steptronic gearshift with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Various driving modes can be selected, while Dynamic Damper Control and M Sport Brakes come as standard.
The new 520d comes with 18-inch light-alloy wheels with W-spoke styling. The result is a sporty touch to what is an elegant profile. On the road, the BMW 520d has huge levels of grip, with Sport, Comfort and ECO PRO driving modes to choose between. The electric power steering has a nice feel, and the big sedan can be hustled along nicely. As an optional extra, Dynamic Damper Control can be selected for making the drive even more controlled. Each BMW 520d has Brake Energy Regeneration.
Having the higher performance engine, the 530d sits on wider 19-inch rims (20-inch optional) and has a special M aerodynamics sports package. Boasting exciting handling and very solid control at any speed, this is a pure driver’s car. Rewarding for all occasions, this is the model I’d love to park up my driveway.

Clear and easy-to-use controls for audio and ventilation are situated below the screen. Beautiful quilted nappa leather upholstery can be had, though in the 520d the standard Dakota leather is still rather nice. Big bottle holders, multiple USB ports, four 12-volt outlets, wireless charging technology for smartphones, a remote control parking function on the BMW key fob, rear seat air vents, a 530 litre boot capacity, 40/20/40 split-fold rear seating, an instrument panel in Sensatec material, 2-zone automatic climate control, electric seat adjustment for driver and front passenger, and a sport leather steering wheel.
