Who loves the feeling of sunshine in the hair and skin? Sunshine is actually really good for you in the right amounts and is essential for helping us absorb calcium, for keeping our bones healthy, and for protecting against some serious chronic diseases. When you’re coming out of a cold winter and into spring, the touch of the sun rays does wonders. For us petrol heads you can get the best of both worlds and catch some rays in an open top convertible. If you’re of the same mind as me and like to drive a convertible, then what is around in the convertible market that will appeal to the new convertible buyer?
A few of the very best convertibles are found in the beautiful shape and form of the new Jaguar F-Type, Porsche Boxster, Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, Audi RS5 Cabriolet, Mazda MX-5 Roadster, Nissan 370Z Roadster and the BMW 6 Convertible. There are numerous vehicles to choose from and this list is not finite, but do make sure you’ve driven the new BMW 6 Convertible to get a taste of a real GT open top machine. Superior comfort, style and performance make this a convertible experience that you’ll remember.
I love the discerning BMW 6 lines, and with the top down the new BMW 6 Convertible is really stunning to look at. It’s a large car with a long wheelbase, and I think this gives the BMW 6 Convertible a bigger presence and more grandeur; a presence that is not dissimilar to that of a Mercedes Benz SL Roadster. The extra length shows of the low-slung body, and its form, really beautifully. Prepare to turn some heads when out and about in this particularly nice open-top tourer.
It’s all about comfort and enjoyment when sinking back into the well-shaped seats. They are bucket styled with superior padding to provide exquisite comfort for long journeys. BMW have got the style and practicality right, because who wants to be getting back pains an hour or two into a journey. Back support is first class, particularly around the lower back area, and when in the driver’s seat, the ergonomics is outstanding. BMW’s multi adjustable driver’s seat, combined with the adjustable steering wheel, ensures that the perfect fit matches with your body type. As mentioned earlier, the BMW 6 Convertible has a long wheelbase, so the ride quality is the best there is in a Convertible. BMW’s work in the suspension layout and design really shines when travelling over all sorts of surfaces. Less firm than the M6 Convertible, the BMW 6 Convertible silkily smooths out the road undulations. Obviously, the sports tune suspension is also massively capable when push comes to shove. The new BMW 6 Convertible is a very fast car in its own right.
On-board the BMW 6 Convertible is and array of wonderful comfort and entertainment features. One, perhaps less snazzy, but very effective feature is the BMW wind deflector which makes life in the front seats all the more serene. The wind deflector nullifies wind draughts that can buffet and bother occupants, even at high speeds – which the BMW 6 Convertible effortlessly performs. The deflector has been designed for easy up, easy down practicality, and it folds and stores away neatly in the luggage compartment.
The BMW 6 Convertible also has two fine seats in the back for occupants to enjoy the open top fun. Fully leather, and superbly sculptured, the space and comfort in the rear seating is best in class. When in the rear, you have your own space specifically tailored for you own needs. Drinks can be placed securely in the rear centre armrest. Storage compartments are available for carrying other small items. The BMW 6 Convertible boasts two-zone climate air-conditioning, which allows for either rear seat passenger to individually adjust the temperature for their own comfort preferences. Obviously, the front seat occupants can also adjust temperature according to their own requirements as well. Set up for the driving enthusiast, the BMW 6 Convertible has each individual control accessible to the fingertips. Just to the left of the driver is a 10.25-inch full colour display screen. The gear selector positioned on the centre console boasts Driving Experience Control, and back from this is the iDrive Touch Controller that both driver and front passenger can easily operate.
Of course, pure driving pleasure would not be satisfied without a BMW performance engine. At the heart of the BMW 6 Convertible is a choice of two amazing engines: one a straight six, and the other an eight. The 3.0-litre six is a twin-turbo performer and can hustle the car along very sweetly and efficiently indeed. A purposeful growl can be heard when making full use of the 235 kW powerhouse. With twin turbo technology, the torque is accessed fully throughout the entire engine rev range. On the other hand, the 332 kW eight cylinder sounds exquisite too as it roars like a true sports car when opened out. The eight cylinders can help the 6 Convertible to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds. Both of the models run their power through an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission which is smooth and precise. Handling is first class, and the big BMW 6 Convertible seems to grip on endlessly while providing the very best in ride comfort.
For a superb open-top touring experience, the new BMW 6 Convertible puts its hand up for taking top spot.
