Chevrolet offer a big bruiser of a Double Cab Ute that means business, looks good doing it, and always remains comfortable for any length of journey. Having massive interior space, massive deck space, and copious off-road performance, this is one of the ‘King of the Road’ light trucks you can buy in 2022.
The other similar size Ute that you can buy in Australia is the RAM Truck, and I think of the two the Chevrolet has the sweeter exterior design. The big chrome bumper and massive chrome grille make up most of the new Silverado’s face, then the delicate headlight design adds a sleekness to the shapely face. The bonnet is higher than some hatchback’s roof, while the actual Silverado’s roofline is quite low-slung compared with the chunky, broad shouldered side-lines. This gives the new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado a raciness to its overall appearance, one of muscle, athleticism, and strength.
Climb inside, and you’re met with wonderfully comfortable seats, loads of leg, shoulder, and head space, and all three versions of the Silverado are well kitted out with technology and premium materials. First impressions of the new Silverado interior are that it is very nice, attractive, modern, and miles better than the even the outgoing models. The new digital display screens are enormous and boast nice bright and crisp lettering and graphics. The instrument display is 12.3 inches, while the horizontal aligned infotainment screen is 13.4 inches. You get a nice blend of colours and tones throughout the cabin, so things like the contrast trim splitting the dash and the door panels, the gloss black plastic around the screens, the matte finish on the main dashboard, and a few dashes of chrome about the place make for a stylish cabin to cover long distances in. The dash design has a much more modern shape, and it highlights the width and not so much the height of the dash. The centre console also gets a classier-looking electronic gear shifter.
The Trail Boss model has a neat cloth seat material that looks hardwearing and very smart, while the two premium models get sexy leather trim. All models boast multi-zone climate control, digital instrumentation, smartphone connection (Premium models get wireless charging and connection), parking sensors, six airbags, an alarm, blind spot sensors, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, active lane keeping assist, and parking assistance with a graphical display. The Boss model gets a six-speaker stereo with auxiliary inputs, USB, and Bluetooth, whereas the premium models get a seven-speaker sound system, the petrol version boasting a subwoofer. Premium Silverados also come with heated electric seats. So yes, a rather nice place to be for loping down the open road anywhere in Australia.
Off-roading capabilities are superb, and the new Chevrolet Silverado has some of the best credentials for the job. 4WD, diff-locks, huge ground clearance, excellent axle articulation, high entry and exit angles, tough underpinnings, massive tyres, and a towing capability that is really in a league of its own which only the RAM Truck shares. Features such as hill descent, hill holder control, rollover stability control, and trailer sway cancellation are present as well.
So, all three versions of the big Ute seriously haul-ass when it comes to towing things, with all of them having a 750 kg braked towing capacity, and a whopping 4500 kg braked for the two Premium versions, while the Boss handling a 4260 kg braked tow rating. The Silverado will tow this all day everyday if the demands are necessary without even breaking a sweat. What power can do this extreme towing business?
Ok, so the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss Auto 4×4 and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ Premium W/Tech Pack Auto 4×4 come with the 6.2-litre V8 ULP petrol with a VVT camshaft design that pumps out 313 kW of power and 624 Nm of torque. The Chevrolet Silverado HD LTZ Premium W/Tech Pack Auto 4×4 is the turbo-diesel variant that comes with a 6.6-litre engine capacity in a V8 formation. Turbo-diesel Silverados boast 332 kW of power and a whopping 1234 Nm of torque! You could pull a house with this variant if the road rules allowed. Both petrol and the diesel engines are linked to a seriously nice and smooth 10-speed automatic gearbox.
This power and size must equate to a hideously expensive price tag I hear you say. Well, actually, all things considered, the comfort, 4×4 action, and towing capacity, the new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado seems a bit of a steal to me. For all of this, not to mention its guaranteed safety – these are big, like your over 6.5 ft brother – you can get the two petrol variants for a bit over $100k, or nearer to $145k for the diesel model.
If I had to tossup between this, a Tesla, a Land Rover or even a BMW 5 Series, I’d take the Silverado any day, as long as there’s available fuel to drink. Chevrolet suggests that a combined fuel consumption figure for both petrol models is between 12- and 13-litres/100 km – again not too bad all things considered.
Space, safety, practicality, comfort, 4×4 prowess, ride comfort, technology, it’s all there.
