According to the head of Chrysler’s marketing department, Dave Rooney, the company has the goal of understanding “what the customer really wants” and then giving it to them. While this may make the Chrysler company sound like the Spice Girls, when they designed the latest version of the Sebring, they achieved this goal. And with none of the tackiness associated with the Spice Girls, although the adjectives “posh” and “sporty” are applicable enough to the Chrysler Sebring.
Chrysler has come up with a number of variants on the basic Sebring. Engine types include 2.0 diesel, 2.4 litre petrol and 2.7 litre V6 petrol. Other, larger engine sizes are available in overseas models of the Chrysler Sebring. The Chrysler Sebring sedan comes in basic, Touring and Limited versions. And there is a 2-door four-seater Cabriolet version which is able to fold the top away and hide it totally in 30 seconds – all remote controlled from the key fob. And for those interested in collecting car trivia or who wish to travel, the Chrysler Sebring is called the Chrysler Cirrus in Mexico.
The most notable feature of the new Chrysler Sebring is its silence. Even at over 140 km/h, there will be no need to shout to hold a conversation with the person in the back seat (the Chrysler Sebring can seat a total of 5 people). This feature is a result of the special noise reduction engineering involving sound deadening technologies and innovative steel technologies. However, this weight and noise reduction in the Chrysler Sebring has not been made at the expense of safety or on-road performance. The high-strength and hot-stamped steel used for the A and B pillars have an unbelievable weight-to-strength ratio, and the dual-phase steel used for the bonnet have excellent impact absorbing qualities. The Chrysler Sebring’s suspension gives it a good, solid feel to match the exterior looks, which feature a distinctively ribbed bonnet and raised accent stripes along the sides.
As it is a nice silent ride – even the doors are triple-sealed to reduce wind noise – the passengers and driver will be able to appreciate the high-tech convenience and entertainment features provided in the Chrysler Sebring. The state-of-the-art sound system should really be called a computer rather than a mere stereo, as it allows viewers/listeners to upload, organize and play music, pictures and movies on a 6.5 inch full-colour screen – all voice activated. This system also has a voice memo function so you can record all those moments of sudden inspiration that seem to strike while waiting at the lights, and satellite radio – and the essential navigation system. The movie playing function, incidentally, only works when the Chrysler Sebring is stationary – Chrysler isn’t stupid.
Other passenger conveniences include the front passenger seat which folds forwards and becomes a table – perfect if you want to park the Chrysler Sebring up somewhere and want to work, draw or eat enjoying great scenery but without facing the extremes of climate. The Chrysler Sebring also has all the safety features one could wish for, ranging from a full array of front, side and curtain airbags to traction control and brake assist.
A car is made to drive and travel in – otherwise you may as well be at home; it’s quiet and has a good sound system. And the Chrysler Sebring is made to travel. Drivers of the Chrysler Sebring have plenty of machine to play with. Those driving the 2.4 litre petrol version will be impressed with the 125 kW of power on offer – and the 220 Nm of torque. The 2.0 diesel version has slightly less power (103 kW) but has a bit more torque for overtaking and swift acceleration without having to use lower gears as much: a grand total of 310 Nm. The 2.7 petrol leads the way however, with a refned 137 kW.
The 2007 Chrysler Sebring is an innovative new car that is pushing the engineering envelope and will be a worthy rival to other high-quality Asian and European sedans.
