Another sweet looking model coming from the sporty CUPRA brand is their Ateca SUV. The 2023 CUPRA Ateca is a sophisticated SUV with a heap of sporting ability and plenty of practicality. Under the bonnet of the new CUPRA Ateca is a powerful 2.0-litre Turbo petrol engine with 4-cylinders, a 7-speed DSG sports automatic gearbox, and 4×4 (AWD) traction. All this for under $70k is all a bit of a dream really!
CUPRA vehicles are tried and true because they use proven VW components in their mechanics. Let’s take a closer look at the attractive CUPRA SUV package. Currently for sale in Australia, we can buy the CUPRA Ateca VZx version. We can have the car in a variety of distinctive, sophisticated exterior colours, the Nevada White being one of the crispest whites I’ve seen in recent times. Its sleek flowing lines break away from the often podgy shape of a traditional SUV. The Ateca VZx is purposeful, hunkered down for travelling quickly, and the neat detailing and athletic shape allows it to slip efficiently through the air. Large alloys are fitted with sport rubber, and other features like the heightened bonnet, quad exhaust outlets, full razor-lined LEDs, and the distinct aluminium detailing look immense. You can even top this off with the optional Brembo brake package and a panoramic sunroof. The CUPRA Ateca VZx SUV has strong, intimidating lines that exude performance and style everywhere you drive.
Underpinning the new CUPRA Ateca’s power is a sweetly tuned AWD chassis that offers the driver the selection of 6 distinct driving modes. The DSG gearbox is awesome and gives instant delivery of a creamy flow of immense acceleration to the AWD platform. A powerful VW-built 2.0-litre Turbo petrol motor with a peak output of 221 kW is provided, where you will feel the sense of exhilaration as you power through the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds.
So, cruising about town and city, the CUPRA Ateca SUV feels remarkably refined, and in Comfort mode it isolates its occupants from road undulations very well. Select Sport mode, and CUPRA has ensured that this setting performs won’t be shaking you senseless – thank goodness! There is more to this beast than meets the eye. Being a strongly built SUV, you can also tow an unbraked trailer of 750 kg or a braked trailer of up to 2100 kg – handy for those caravan or boat pullers among us.
Inside the CUPRA Ateca’s cabin, there is a very high level of comfort, the seats offering excellent support and space, particularly for those in the front. Loads of storage throughout the cabin is good. Drivers and front seat occupants will appreciate the easy-to-use physical dials for your temperature and fan adjustment. And, even if you’re leggy, you won’t find it difficult to get yourself comfortable in this space. Long hauls are enjoyable, too.
Rear seat occupants will be impressed with the general space. Head and foot space is very good, with the boxy shape adding to the good levels of head room. For long-legged folk, the rear seat leg room may be a little tight, but it is good on the whole. These days most SUVs perform luggage duty pretty well, and the square Ateca boot shape aids its cargo carrying ability. 485 litres behind the Ateca’s rear seats is not huge – a BMW X3 boasts 550 litres – but these rear seats can also be 60:40 split-folded as you require any additional space. Even rear seat passengers get air vents, USB-C ports, and a fold-down central armrest. Also, the big side windows mean that plenty of light gets let through into the back seats. Wide opening rear doors is a nice touch, especially if you’re going to need these to fit child seats into the back bench. This is a simple enough task, with 3 top-tether and 2 ISOFIX points available in the new Ateca SUV.
As we just get the one CUPRA Ateca model, the VZx is a high-end offering with a grunty 9-speaker sound system. The equipment list is generous, so wireless phone charging, driver’s seat electric adjustment, leather seats, ambient interior lighting, multi zone climate control, keyless start, paddle shifters, active cruise control, the premium sound system, Heads up display, a digital driver’s instrument display, a navigation system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless phone connection with integrated app ability and phone navigation, a spare smartphone charging cable, parking assistance, parking sensors, assisted self-parking capability, Laser/ LED headlight technology, and welcome home lights with the CUPRA logo cast out on the ground as the doors open, all these things adding up to a satisfying package.
What about CUPRA safety? The CUPRA Ateca isn’t short on safety credentials. Euro NCAP gave the SEAT Ateca a full 5 stars, and the CUPRA Ateca is essentially the performance version of this SEAT SUV. So, the new CUPRA Ateca VZx SUV comes with safety features that include: AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, driver fatigue detection and warning, safe exit warning, surround-view cameras, front and rear parking sensors, and seven airbags.
This is a really attractive performance SUV. You’ll find it really hard to find one as good as this for the same money. All this for under $70k! There are some options that you might like to add, however. These are the snap, crackle, and pop sounding Akrapovic exhaust system: $5950. The Brembo brake package: $4050. And the Panoramic sunroof: $1800.
Put your foot down in a brand new CUPRA Ateca VZx SUV, and you really can get pinned back in the seat as you rush toward the redline. The adaptive AWD system allows for some pretty accomplished talent, even in the wet. Head for a CUPRA, and you won’t be disappointed.
