Built in Spain, the CUPRA’s high performance Formentor boasts an SUV shape but sits pretty low to the ground, being only 5 cm taller than the CUPRA Leon model. You could easily say that this is also a tall hatchback design. One thing is for sure – it looks pretty nice from all angles.
The face of the Formentor is one of strong purpose and aggression. Its focused gaze and creased bonnet lines exude excitement and hot performance. Even down the sides of the vehicle, the creased lips over the top of the wheel arches and the sexy alloys (18–20 inch) are strikingly good-looking. Head around the back of the new CUPRA Formentor and look at the taillight bar. What an impressive design that looks stunning at night when it’s all lit up. Quad exhaust outlets, a rear diffuser, and a roof spoiler complete the back-end of the Formentor.
Get yourself seated in the driver’s seat, and the first impression is one of the design being sharp and stylish. There are blue inlays and accented stitching, along with a twin layering effect going on along the dash. Snazzy bronze CUPRA logos and lots of cool angular designs all match up to make this a unique drive. CUPRA’s Formentor has a sweet interior with an excellent large touchscreen at the centre of its dash. The digital driver’s display looks very cool and racy, boasting plenty of different display modes.
CUPRA seats are very supportive and comfortable with a high level of workmanship and materials used in the product. Electrically adjustable heated seats are available and very user-friendly with height and reach adjustment. The steering wheel is also highly adjustable, thus people of all sorts of shapes and sizes will find this an accommodating vehicle to drive.
Back seat passengers should be impressed with the level of space. The seats have been set fairly low down, thus providing excellent head space even for taller adults. Leg room is good to. Climate control and 2 USBC points found back here, so too some large bottle holders in the doors.
Boot space is a useful square shape, and the FWD CUPRA Formentor models have 450 litres of luggage carrying space back here. AWD models have the rear diff taking up a bit more of the boot space, so in these models there is 420 litres. Hooks, tie down points, storage compartments, and a space saver wheel all add to the practicality of the Formentor. Back seats are split folding, too. You can also fit up to three child seats in this car.
Wireless phone charging, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, satellite navigation, electric windows, climate control, plenty of cabin storage, auxiliary points for a wide range of accessories; yes, it’s all there.
Priced around the $55–65k mark, the CUPRA Formentor is quite a lot of car for the money. There are four models to choose from: the V, VZ, VZe, and the VZx. Kicking off the range, the V boasts FWD and 140 kW of power. Up a step takes you to the 180 kW AWD VZ. The VZe is FWD but comes with a hybrid powerplant, where the 1.4-litre petrol Turbo combines with an electric motor, both of which produce a total of 110 kW of power when you require it. Frugality is what this form of Formentor does best.
Then comes the top of the range=topper, the VZx, and this really is a very quick vehicle to drive. Under the bonnet is the fully fledged 228 kW form of the 2.0-litre turbo ICE powerplant you’ll find in the less powerful V (140 kW) and VZ (180 kW) versions. The CUPRA Formento VZx hunts down BMW M variants and Audi S and RS versions with a talent that might just surprise you. Yes, all this for less than $70k!
Adaptive dampers with a range of modes, a sporty feeling to the steering, tight and accurate road holding even at high speeds, and a nice driving position all add up to the new CUPRA Formentor being an impressive car to drive. Formentor VZ and, particularly, the VZx versions pack a punch of acceleration and speed. 0-100 km/h can be seen off in 4.5 seconds in the top of the range VZx version.
Superbly sporty, good looking, and with plenty of VW running gear make this a solid unit and a force to be reckoned with. The CUPRA Formentor has to be on your mid-size large Hatch/SUV shopping list.
