The smallest Ford SUV in Australia is the 2018 Ford EcoSport SUV. Created to be a talent in the city the new Ecosport SUV takes everything the city can throw at it in its stride. You’ll be pleased to note the EcoSport SUV is happy enough running on the open road limits, and it’s economical on both fronts. Plenty of useful technology is placed inside one of these vehicles so you’re not short changed here either. It won’t be able to carry as much luggage as the bigger Ford Endura or Ford Everest models, but the deal is nicely set up for carrying the kids and gear to-and-from school now worries.
Leaving behind the breakfast dishes and carrying the coffee out to the car, the EcoSport has what it takes to carry me and my coffee to the office. Cup holders are present for front and rear seat occupants. Many storage compartments are situated throughout the cabin area, and there is an overhead console for storing your sunglasses inside. A rear parcel blind comes as standard, and the power windows are standard on all models. Ambiente models get the Lanai seat material for smart looks and durability. Trend models get the distinctive Dwell fabric with twin patterns. Salerno leather is pure elegance for any EcoSport SUV in Titanium guise. Carpet mats, scuff plates, mud flaps, a waterproof luggage mat, roof rails and cross bars, and a roof spoiler are some of the snazzy accessories you can buy for your new EcoSport SUV.
Five stars are pretty common these days in most new cars, but the small EcoSport SUV provides great features for safety. There is all-round protection: seven airbags (including side and curtain airbags), LED daytime running lamps for the Titanium and there’s even a fancy electrochromatic rear-view mirror for the Titanium model.
SYNC 3 Connectivity System6 with Applink 7 and enhanced Voice Control is standard across the range of new Ford EcoSport SUVs. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration make listening to music a breeze, and the standard six-speaker sound system packs some great sound clarity. Trend and Titanium models get one-or-two extra features like satellite navigation with voice control, an 8-inch touch screen, seven speakers for the audio and the more powerful EcoBoost 1.0-litre engine. For all the bells and whistles, the Titanium has the leather seats, smart keyless entry, auto climate control and a sunroof – just to name a few.
Make sure you fit a luggage screen so you can take full advantage of the 743 litre luggage space up to the roof behind the rear seats. Foldable rear seats allow for more luggage carrying options as well. A handy bit of space is available for rear seat passengers, while those occupying the front seats are well catered for with space and comfort.
Out on the road the EcoSport SUV is surprisingly nippy, feeling sharper than the 0-100 km/h times suggest. Running over some rough roads shows some commendable poise, while the ride quality and comfort work well – particularly when not pushed too hard. The tyres can struggle for grip when you get a little excited in the corners. So for power the new Ford EcoSport Ambiente puts the 1.5-litre petrol engine to work. In this form 90 kW of power and 150 Nm of torque are at the ready. Fuel economy is around 7.0 litres/100 km. Being a 3-cylinder the engine sounds pretty cool when under acceleration, and the economy doesn’t suffer much even when loaded up. The six-speed auto quickly finds the optimum gear to keep things moving along smoothly. Trend and Titanium models get the punchy little 1.0-litre Turbo petrol EcoBoost engine. The 3-cylinder motor is sprightly and packs more torque (170 Nm) than the 1.5-litre engine. Economy is similar, sometimes better than the larger motor, while the six-speed auto adds paddle shifters for the driver to play with.
Towing duties can be carried out with any of the models, and a useful 750 kg unbraked rating impresses. You’ll be able to use this for picking up the prunings and rubbish in the garden. Night driving is made easy with powerful quad beam headlights. Titanium models boast HID headlamps and signature LED DRLs.
There will be some who like the upright, chunky Ford EcoSport styling, and there will be some who feel that the small SUV looks a little top heavy. But, all in all this is an impressively efficient, modern and safe SUV that is in its element running the urban chores.
