It’s a pleasure to have the arrival of the brand new Ford Focus mid-size sedan. A decent boot at the back separates the luggage from the people inside, which is great for when you have wet or smelly cargo to transport with you. The boot compartment in a sedan is essentially alienated from the passenger’s cabin area, unlike in a hatch or wagon where the luggage is more accessible to those in the rear seats – especially when there is no divider or luggage tray present. For this reason I quite like the sedan option, and I can see why it is preferred by some.
The new Ford Focus remains one of the better handling FWD small cars out there. Now available as a stylish sedan, the 2018 Focus Sedan rides and handles in a predictable, safe manner that is backed up by one of the best FWD chassis in its class. Let’s take a look at why this Focus is attracting plenty of positive attention.
Irksome sedan designs can disappoint. There are plenty of weird looking sedans with lumpy rear ends that look a little awkward. Ford’s design team have done well to mollify the tricky sedan architecture, and what we get to enjoy is the familiar gritty Focus front end styling with a purposeful backside that is pleasant on the eye and well-finished in its detailing. The boot lid has a spoiler blended into the upper lip design. A slim brake light has been incorporated into the spoiler which is a classy touch. The bumper has the same colour as the body paintwork and is crimped with a smart indention across its surface. Trapezoidal tail lights wrap around the Focus Sedan’s haunches and finish the elegant styled sedan sweetly. Side skirts and under bumper black plastic moulding keep the Focus Sedan looking grown up and well endowed. To sum up the Focus Sedan’s exterior design in sign language would have most people giving it the thumbs up. It is one of the nicer looking medium-size sedans on the market that remains affordable, athletic and attractive.
Yes, you can often lose a little on overall luggage volume when purchasing the sedan model over a hatchback equivalent. However, with the new 2018 Ford Focus Sedan you get a useful 373 litres with the rear seats up. If luggage space isn’t a major for you, then the Focus sedan should suffice – though in comparison to a Toyota Corolla with 470 litres on offer you might find the Focus Sedan comes up a bit short in cargo carrying capacity. The 60:40 split folding rear seat will make things a bit more practical should you need more space.
How about room for occupants? Room for occupants in a new Ford Focus Sedan is good. Those in the front seats are going to enjoy some very well sculptured seats that are good for long haul comfort. Back seat passengers – particularly those in the window seats – have very good comfort and space. You also have power windows and three-point seat belts for all rear seat passengers – of which there are three when full. Window seat passengers also get the centre arm rest which has cup holders. Having the cup holders available in the rear is at the cost of being without middle rear seat passenger number three.
Crash tests have proven the 2018 Ford Focus is very solid and safe. Safety is top notch and a five-star rating is standard with features like six airbags, ABS, EBD, seat belt reminders, DSC with Traction Control, EBA 4, Hill Launch Assist, rear parking sensors, a rear view camera and torque vectoring control. A Trailer Sway Control system is available should you need to tow your trailer full of garden rubbish to the dump. The car goes, stops and handles very well, indeed.
Ford Focus Sedans kick off with the Trend styling packaging. In this guise you get to enjoy a well-equipped car with climate control, cruise control with a speed limiting function, a remote key, cloth seat trim, electric windows, an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen, a Ford SYNC 3 Connectivity System with Applink and Enhanced Voice Control2. Bluetooth Mobile Phone Integration3 and satellite navigation is also standard. A good six speaker sound system runs with USB Integration, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Integration2.
Need more luxury? A Titanium Ford Focus Sedan will get you things like larger 18-inch alloy wheels and other nice safety equipment which include: Active City Stop, a Blind Spot Information system with rear cross traffic alert, and enhanced active Park Assist system and both front and rear parking sensors. Some of the other equipment is also pretty nice – so things like a stiffer sports suspension, auto headlights, a body styling kit with side skirts, LED DRLs, follow me home lighting, power mirrors with side indicators, smart rear LED tail lights, ambient lighting, dual zone climate control, keyless entry, push button start, a leather steering wheel, a leather gear knob, an electrochromatic rear mirror, rain sensing wipers, and a nice 9-speaker Sony audio upgrade are all present in a Titanium model. There are some optional things like a power sunroof and adaptive cruise control in the offering as well, so it’s worth checking out these optional extras to get exactly what you want for your own new Ford Focus Sedan.
Powering the 2018 Ford Focus Sedan is the small petrol motor known as the 1.5-litreL GTDi 4-cylinder EcoBoost. This 132 kW engine is grunty and responsive with a maximum of 240 Nm of torque available between 1600-and-5000 rpm. The six-speed manual versions can sneak under 6 litres/100 km on average when driven lightly. Six-speed auto sedans manage a little over 6 litres/100 km on average. A smooth, punchy engine makes for a satisfying drive – especially for those who like to get things moving and be on time. Your new Ford Focus Sedan can whisk up to 100 km/h from a standstill in around eight seconds. Motorway speeds are refined and relaxed with a little road noise being the only quibble.
Hats off to the folk at Ford for focusing their efforts on a fine new Ford Focus Sedan. The car is nice to live with and more than packed with plenty of modern technology and style.
