Well, three-cylinders and plenty of pep are delivered in Ford’s unique Fiesta ST Hatchback package. Hot it is, and remarkably composed making for a delightful little hatch affair. Add to that a great sound from the three-pot and you’ve got yourself a deal!
Sharp looks kick off at the front with an intense focused stare from the 4 LED headlights. A sculptured front bumper houses distinctive ST grille treatment, and low down driving lights are a neat addition set into grey surrounding trim. Walking around to the side profile and you get some pretty snazzy 17-inch alloys (18-inch optional) giving it plenty of rubber to grip the road, nice big brake callipers coloured red, and side skirts. Around the rear of the ST Fiesta you have a roof spoiler, rear splitter where you find twin exhaust outlets, an ST badge and a cute little window wiper to keep the view out the back of the hatch nice-and-clear when you’re ‘snotting it’ in the wet. The visual picture is really classy.
As you might have already guessed the 2019 Ford Fiesta ST means business, so when you truly put your foot down you have quite the exhilarating drive. Under the bonnet sits the feisty 1.5-litre EcoBoost, three-pot turbo-petrol. When cruising, one of the cylinders shuts down for adding more fuel sipping ability to the performance. A full 147 kW feels instant, while the 290 Nm of torque from just 1600 rpm and all the way to 4000 rpm, in a car weighing less than 1300 kg is exceptional. Running with a six-speed manual gearbox sees motorway work an effortless task. The small Fiesta ST sits happily on 2250 rpm at 100 km/h in sixth gear, right ready to pull when you flatten your right foot. More power needed and you can shift the gear down quickly for fiercer pick-up. Ford rate the new Fiesta ST good for 232 km/h. They also claim a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds.
Inside the new ST cabin you find a more elegant cabin with lots of sporty touches to make the drive fun. A sporty steering wheel, sport aluminium pedals, a chrome gear shift lever with nice stitched leather surrounds and replica carbon fibre inlays keep the car looking classy. The centre of the dash has a large infotainment touchscreen that boasts all the latest wizardry including SYNC3 voice control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And, there’s a decent sound system for your favourite music play list. Satellite navigation and phone communication are standard.
Seat comfort is nice and the side bolsters do a great job when the corners get smoked! A Quaife Sports diff and Michelin rubber ensures there is loads pf grip while the car sits flat and low around the bends. Passing power is impressive for such a small engine but so too is the stopping ability of the new Ford Fiesta ST. Fuel efficiency is always going to be a plus and the long gearing sees it sip 95 premium unleaded at an average of just 6.0 litres/100km. With this smaller size hatch, and when you add the reasonable price tag (especially for the amount of speed and equipment on-board) this quite the pocket rocket – and you even get launch control.
Autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, driving modes, traction control, blind spot monitoring are some excellent safety features. There are also six airbags, auto high-beam, an adjustable speed-limiter, traffic sign recognition, a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.
Enter the 2019 Ford Fiesta ST, and we have here the small hot hatch leader, and in many reviewers eyes this out-classes rivals like the Renault Clio RS, Peugeot 208 GTi, Suzuki Swift Sport and even the Polo GTI.
