They are about as rugged as they come and are popular for plenty of good reasons. Many farmers, tradies and lifestyle block owners love the room and comfort, love the bold styling and appreciate the powerful performance that the recent Ford Ranger utes deliver. 2019 has the Ford Ranger freshened up and ready to impress; and its models like this that help keep Ford at the forefront of new-ute buyer’s minds.
Impressive dimensions not only look huge but they also deliver on practical size, space and comfort. You buy one of these for towing and carrying purposes as well as interior space and comfort. So if you’re going to be going away for a few days, yes, the tray out the back will easily accommodate your luggage. Inside you’ll find the seats are superbly comfortable, and the rear seat occupants have plenty of space as well. Under the rear seats are large storage compartments, so for items like tow ropes, straps, fire extinguishers, tools, first aid kits and blankets these compartments are brilliant. Two USB charging ports and a 12 V plug are available inside the cabin for back seat passengers.
Some of the new modern additions to the 2019 Ford Ranger are items like the aluminium bonnet and a massive air filter for sucking loads of nice clean air into the intake system. The new Ranger uses a single leaf suspension at the rear which has a superior ride and toughness for rugged terrain and heavy loads.
But beyond the awesome exterior appearance are some significant changes. The 2019 Ford Ranger has undergone numerous mechanical tweaks to make it more comfortable and more user friendly, and there is one extra engine in the form of the Raptor that has power delivery taking a step forward. So, the 2019 Ranger kicks off with a four-cylinder 2.2-litre turbo diesel (118 kW @ 3200rpm/385 Nm @ 1600-2500 rpm), a five-cylinder 3.2-litre turbo diesel (147 kW @ 3000 rpm/470 Nm @ 1750-2500 rpm), and then the range topping 2.0-litre twin-scrolling turbodiesel (157 kW @ 3750 rpm/500 Nm @ 1750-2000 rpm). The 2.0-litre Ford Ranger Raptor bi-turbo engine (which also comes in the Ford Transit) has walked in a direction that differs from most large cc engine lovers, however the engine itself walks the talk and even has a brilliant 10-speed automatic — a transmission option exclusive to the 2-litre Wildtrak version. It’s slicker than the 6-speed automatic in the other Ranger models, and it helps the bi-turbo Wildtrak achieve a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 7.4 litres/100 km — less than the 3.2-litre’s 8.9 litres/100 km.
Driving a new Ford Ranger on the open-road you’ll find the vehicle is really nicely planted with tight steering response. Plenty of grip is available from the massive rubber contact pads that the tyres provide, and the crisp performance is enjoyable for everyday driving styles. You can tow up to 3500 kg and you have awesome stopping power and safety features in this five-star safety ute. Technology additives come largely in the form of safety upgrades. First-in-class parking assist (standard on the 3.2-litre XLT and above), autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control (both exclusively on Wildtrak) are the main scalps, but the base XL does manage to pack the likes of trailer sway control and roll-over mitigation as standard. The Ford Ranger XL Supercab and above also now offer rear parking sensors, while front parking sensors are standard from XLT model and above.
Modern Ford Rangers are very nice vehicles to travel inside. All of the best modern infotainment equipment is found on-board. Those who want the most equipment will want to look over in the XLT showroom corner. Here you’ll find an 8-inch colour touch screen, 6 audio speakers (2 Tweeters, 4 Woofers), an AM/FM stereo radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth with Phone/Audio Streaming, a CD player (MP3 compatible), satellite navigation, Voice-Activated Controls, USB Ports x 2, a bedliner with a 12V socket, inner tie downs, load box illumination, a roller shutter, a powered tailgate lock, a tailgate with lift assistance, an 8-way power driver seat, lumbar support for the driver, heated front seats, Wildtrak leather accented seats (black with orange stitching), a 230V inverter – rear of centre console, ambient lighting – multi-colour, an auxillary 12V power outlet – lower dashboard, a centre console with a single lid with 2 cup holders and coin storage, a cooled centre console, child seat ISOFIX anchorage points, climate control – dual zone, dual colour 4.2-inch instrumentation screens, auto headlamps, a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, power windows, rain sensing windscreen wipers and an electrochromatic rear view mirror to set the ball rolling – you get the picture!
Head off-road in the new Ford Ranger truck and the all-terrain system has mode selection and tenacious traction. Excellent ground clearance and entry/departure angles make short work of some very difficult landscapes. High and low range options make the new Ranger a formidable off-road companion. Trail Control mode is a really nice off-road mode where the new Ford Ranger pretty much takes care of the rough stuff for you. So you simply “set it and forget it” while you set your mind to focusing on pointing and shooting the Ranger through the obstacles. You can’t find this sort of feature on any other ute in this segment.
Ford’s focus on comfort and technology is, at least in part, a reaction to the growing number of buyers chasing a ute that can be used as a family car as well as a load-lugging workhorse. Typically, you’ll be able to have your new 2019 Ranger in a wide range of shapes, sizes and trims – just what buyers want; and there are plenty of options and packages for both exterior and interior styling to meet your own tastes and preferences.
