Ford has given the biggest name to its new large SUV. Hopes are high that the new Ford Everest will be a mountainous success, and when you get to see the Ford Everest in the metal, the 4×4 is a special vehicle. Offering 143 kW and 470 Nm the 3.2 Duraotorq Diesel has the muscle and the fuel efficiency to make the Everest a class leader. Space is good, and the ride is first class – even over tough terrain.
Appearances are important, and it’s nice to note that the Everest has kept its large proportions balanced and trim. This heavyweight all-terrain vehicle has a hefty 2400 kg weight for the Trend and Titanium models, however this bodes well for ride comfort and stability on the road. The new Ford Everest is a doddle to drive, and it easily lopes along the highway at more than the legal limit. All three Everest models come with a six-speed automatic gearbox, and the marriage of gearbox and engine is a good one, offering excellent fuel economy on the open road for such a big SUV. The high ride height, and the solid feel, delivers the driver with a good dose of confidence and offers a feeling of safety.
A hallmark of the Everest is its quiet diesel and relaxed touring ability. There is plenty of power from the 3.2-litre turbo-diesel starting from very low in the engine revs. There are quicker vehicles out there but the Everest has the goods to pull away from slower traffic and pull up to 3 tonnes – as long as the trailer is braked.
Inside the Everest is a spacious cabin that will be enjoyed front to rear. The seats are comfortable for the large adult, and there are quality features to help make the long journey comfortable and entertaining. There are four 12V power sockets throughout the cabin, which makes it easy for the kids to play electronic games and connect up to the internet on their mobile phones.
The base model Ford Everest Ambiente boasts an eight-speaker sound system with grunty tones and excellent sound quality. Steering wheel audio controls, Aux, USB and iPod integration is standard. Trend and Titanium models get the ten speaker upgrade. Bluetooth technology enables you and your occupants to chat hands-free with friends, and Ford’s Voice Control feature is simple and effective to use. The Everest Ambiente also gets an Interior Command Centre with a 4.2-inch colour TFT screen. The two higher-end models offer an 8-inch colour touch screen with MyKey Control which works extremely well. Also, the Trend and Titanium provide privacy glass which looks nice as well as functioning as UV ray protection.
Many of the interior items are electronically controlled in the luxury models, while even the Ambiente has power adjustable exterior mirrors that fold when parked and are heated for cold mornings. The Ford Everest Titanium model boasts full leather seats, electronically adjustable and heated front seats and third row seats that split 50:50 electronically at the push of a button. All Ford Everest models are capable of carrying seven occupants.
The Ford Everest will always have its size as a big safety feature; however the Everest also comes equipped with all the modern safety features to make it a very safe large SUV. A rear view camera, a comprehensive airbag presence – there is even side curtain airbags in the third row, a beltminder system for first and second rows, DSC, ABS, Electronic Power Assisted Steering, Hill Launch Assist and a trailer sway control system are some of the five-star safety features you’ll find standard. Roll Over Mitigation, Hill Descent Control and an adjustable speed limiter are top features, too.
Drive a new Ford Everest and it quickly becomes likable. This is a serious off-road vehicle, and it was always Ford’s intention that it be should be able to be used as a full-on 4×4 vehicle. Excellent traction, exceptional ground clearance and steep approach and departure angles mean that you can tackle some pretty hairy stuff out there!
This is one of the better large SUVs on the market with loads of practical functionality, luxury and all-round competence. I should imagine this will sell well.
