Get in quick and purchase the last of the legendary Falcon series. The new Ford FG X Falcon has everything you could want in a fine, roomy sedan and wagon. The large space accommodates five adults in comfort and there is plenty of boot space – even with the LPi version. Numerous engines are available, and whatever engine is chosen, there is always plenty of power on tap. A new Ford FG X Falcon is the base model and comes well equipped for making the journey comfortable and very relaxed. Opt for the Ford FG X Falcon G6E, and there are a number of added features to exec the big sedan up and make it feel a little more upmarket.
Three main engines are offered for the 2016 Ford Falcon. The two petrol plants come in the form of a four-cylinder 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine developing 176kW @ 5500rpm and 353 Nm of torque @ 2000 rpm, or a 4.0-litre DOHC Inline 6 with 195 kW @ 6000rpm and 391Nm of torque @ 3250 rpm. The LPG engine available to the Falcon is the strong performing EcoLPi DOHC Inline 6 with 198kW @ 5000rpm and 409 Nm of torque @ 3250 rpm. As you can imagine, the healthy level of power and torque for all variants allow the large sedan to accelerate quickly and cruise effortlessly at high speeds. Having cruise control as standard means that you can keep your speeds legal and relaxed, though the temptation to cruise at speeds much higher than the legal limit is still there. The link between engine power and gear selection is smooth and responsive, and all Falcon FG X models have plenty of power for passing slower moving traffic.
On the road, the Falcon is one of the nicest riding large sedans for the money. At any speed, the Falcon FG X feels well planted and solid. Cornering is attacked with confidence and with plenty of grip, and each engine can be hustled along surprisingly quickly when push comes to shove. All the FG X Falcons come with a silky smooth six-speed auto. A six-speed manual is available on the standard Falcon model. The thriftiest of the range is the Ecoboost 2.0-litre, averaging a bit over 8 litres/100 km. The 4.0-litre petrol is amazingly frugal and delivers under 10 litres on the open road most of the time. The Eco LPi returns a little over 10 litres/ 100 km but the cheaper price for LPG at the pump makes it attractive.
An anti-lock braking system, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) are standard. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and a Traction Control System (TCS) are also standard safety features. There is a comprehensive airbag presence throughout the cabin, and the latest safety cage technology means that the five-star Ford FG X Falcon is a very safe car.
Tackling the long journey has always been a strong area for the Falcon, and the new Ford Falcon is no exception. The seats are very roomy in both the front and rear, while the array of comforts and luxury items is extensive. Ford’s SYNC 2 connectivity system with voice-activated hands free calling, an automatic phone book transfer, text messaging support (compatible phones only), digital music player support, an 8-inch colour touch screen, four speaker surround sound, AM/FM Radio, digital broadcast radio, a single slot CD, electric windows, air-conditioning and luxury cloth seats are standard in the FG X Falcon. The Ford FG X Falcon G6E gets a few more features like premium leather seats, dual-zone climate control, and a nine-speaker audio system with a 150 watt amplifier and subwoofer. Both FGX Falcons have systems with MP3 CD capability, a Wi-Fi feature, satellite navigation system with Traffic Message Channel and iPod Integration as standard.
Opt for the automatic variants, and you can tow up to 2300 kg with a braked trailer. What makes the ride so good is the front virtual pivot control link suspension and the rear control blade independent suspension. The standard 535 litres of luggage space in the boot is hungry and will swallow a lot of luggage. This volume shrinks to 464 litres in the EcoLPi model.
Sadly, this is the last of the Falcon range – unless Ford has a secret up its sleeve that we don’t know about in a few years from now. Always a pleasure to drive, the Ford FG X Falcon is a superb large sedan.
