Cars that are able to cruise nicely on the open road are always a joy to drive. With a supple and comfortable ride, plenty of space and smooth refined looks, the 2016 Ford Mondeo Wagon is a pleaser.
More mature looking than its predecessor, the refined and elegant looks of the new Ford Mondeo Wagon are easy on the eye. There is little to dislike about the design, and the copious amount of room inside is well hidden in a balanced and sleek exterior profile. Larger dimensions do mean that the new Mondeo wagon has been enhanced as an even better load hauler, and the level of on-board features has stepped up to a higher level. The new Ford Mondeo Wagon has 500 litres of luggage space with the seats up – slightly less room than with the Ford Mondeo Hatch. However, when the seats are folded flat the capacity is 1605 litres and larger than the Hatch. The more upright Wagon shape has a more useful day-to-day shape.
Ride comfort feels plusher and more upmarket, and Ford’s main wagon offers a set of excellent powerful and efficient engines to power the Mondeo line-up. A healthy dollop of performance and excellent fuel efficiency does set the Wagon up nicely as an excellent low-cost possibility. Ford gives the buyer the choice of two of their most fuel efficient and powerful engines in the form of a 2.0-litre petrol EcoBoost and a 2.0-litre Duratorq turbo-diesel. Two forms of the Ecoboost engine provide either 149 kW or 177 kW output, respectively. The Diesel alternative is a superbly torquey engine with 132 kW and 400 Nm. Fuel efficiency for the diesel can be get down to below 6 litres/100 km.
One thing about the new Ford Mondeo Wagon is that it is a safe wagon. It boasts driver and passenger airbags, seat mounted side airbags and one airbag for the driver’s knee. Curtain airbags are standard on all models, and they are present for front and rear occupants. Ford Mondeo’s safety shell is very strong and is designed to cocoon its occupants in an accident. Dynamic aids enable the Ford Mondeo Wagon to remain as stable and in touch with the road in an impressive manner. The combination if DSC and TC work to provide a solid connection with the road, and the ABS has a very strong braking feel and works incredibly quickly to give as much power to an emergency stop as possible on all road surfaces. ABS also works to reduce wheel spin, wheel lock and over or under-steering.
Ford Mondeo Wagons are all equipped with Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), and the system creates excellent feedback for the driver at any road speed. The slower the speeds, the lighter the steering feels, while the faster the speeds, the weightier the steering feels.
There seems to be an abundance of new technology in the Ford Mondeo Wagons. Ford’s Auto Start-Stop feature minimises the time your engine idles indefinitely in heavy traffic and at traffic lights. This feature saves 4-to-10% in fuel use. A six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission provides the option of manual gear selection via the paddle shifters on mounted on the steering wheel.
Adaptive cruise control means that as the traffic flow changes so does the cruise function. Sensors are built into the front of the vehicle which sense whether the traffic is slowing or speeding up at a scanning speed of 20 times per second. The cruise control function will slow down with the traffic, and speed up with the traffic – up to the dialled-in speed you have requested.
A Blind Spot Information system, a rear-view camera and Pre Collision Assist are other top features available to the Mondeo Wagon range.
MyKey is a new feature provided that enables peace of mind for the parent of a driving teenager. MyKey programmes the car to drive as the teenager would drive if you (the parent) were in the car with them. MyKey has the ability to remind them to wear seatbelts, limit their speed, keep their music volume down and concentrate on their drive and not their phone. This is a huge asset, and a feature I really like, particularly as I know what it can be like with teenagers. Ford Mondeo Wagons also come equipped with Park Assist which steers you into a car park space. Accidents in carpark manoeuvres are practically eliminated.
Seating comfort is first class, and the Ford Mondeo Wagon has many entertainment features and luxury items – as you would expect. The Ford Mondeo Ambiente is the base model that is equipped very well indeed. The top of the range Titanium adds leather, heated front and rear seats and Enhanced Park Assist – you get the picture. A large central touchscreen controls things like the radio and satellite-navigation. Climate control and the heated seats are controlled via more orthodox buttons.
The latest Ford Mondeo Wagon delivers handsome looks, comfort and powerful 2.0-litre engines. With larger dimensions, you will enjoy the space a Ford Mondeo Wagon provides.
