A lazy day in summer beckons, and a drive along the coastline has you organizing an outing for the day with some swimming and dining on the menu. Outside in the driveway is parked the latest Ford Mustang Ecoboost already for the road and packed with plenty of performance. Numerous features are standard items, but at the heart of the new Mustang is the juicy 2.3-litre Ecoboost engine that Ford, somehow, has managed to draw out 233 kW and 432 Nm. You’ll be looking amazing on the road, as few cars look quite as racy as the new Ford Mustang.
There are convertible versions of the Ford Mustang models, and there is also the thundering V8 Ford Mustang GT – just to let you know there are other versions available. The Fastback Mustang Ecoboost models look incredible. I can’t get away from the gorgeous design of the new Ford Mustang. It embodies a sleekness that is bulked up by muscle and power. These ingredients do grab attention on the road, so be ready to watch the eyes glance your way as you take it out on the road. The sound of the engine notes are attention grabbing on their own, however the intimidating presence on the road is a bit of a rush, I must say. Both the Fastback and Convertible Ford Mustang Ecoboost models have the powerful face that incorporates arrow-like headlights and daytime running lights as standard. Dual exhaust pipes feature at the back, and the new Mustang sits on 19-inch rims with 255/40 R19 rubber. LED tail lamps are standard, and these are unmistakably Mustang, with their three horizontal bars on an inward lean. The new Ford Mustang Ecoboost models come with the choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, and the car features a classic signature trapezoidal grille and the shark-bite front fascia.
You can get into some real ‘monkey business’ with a car of this type, not necessarily in a bad way but just for fun. With the powerful 2.3-litre engine, the Ford Mustang can complete the 0-100 km/h dash in under six seconds. Interestingly enough, the performance potential doesn’t mess too much with what are some very good fuel consumption figures for a car of this stature. You should be able average a return of around 8 litres/100 km, according to the Ford manufacturer. I guess if you drive with a lot of flat foot rushes, then you can only expect the Ford Mustang to drink a bit – but that’s the same for any car. CO2 emissions are only 179 g/km. Drivers have a choice between a number of Drive Modes that adjusts the ESC, throttle response, automatic gear-shift patterns, and steering. Modes include: Normal, Sport+, Track or Snow/Wet settings. The electronic steering also adjusts accordingly to give excellent feedback in all conditions.
Hit the road when the weather packs up, and the Ford Mustang Ecoboost remains focused and solid on the road. Dynamic driving aids, rain sensing wipers, and even Pony projection lights and fog lights all work to make the driving experience a joy whatever the weather. The rear-wheel drive with limited-slip differential is definitely needed with all these horses chomping at the bit, however the Mustang Ecoboost rides remarkably civilised on any road surface. Underpinning the ride and road holding is a double-ball-joint independent MacPherson strut and tubular stabiliser bar at the front; while at the rear an integral-link independent with coil springs, solid stabiliser bar, and twin-tube dampers complete the package. When push comes to shove, the Ford Mustang Ecoboost models can run with the best of them – the handling is that good.
If you have a long journey ahead of you, the Mustang does provide a modern and comfortable leather interior with plenty of technology to relax and entertain you. Cruise control, cup holders, dual-zone climate control and cool illuminated scuff plates are standard. You have a nice sports leather steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment, a nine-speaker audio system with auxiliary inputs, and cruise and audio controls are standard. Satellite navigation will help guide you home, and, of course, there is the ever-present Bluetooth communication package.
Ford take safety very seriously, and in the new Mustang Ecoboost there is a comprehensive list of all the best safety features. Airbags, DSC, belt reminder systems, ISO fix child seat anchorage points and a rear view camera system are some of the goodies available.
This is one of the coolest drives out on our roads. You are seated in a special six-way powered sport seat and at the helm of a legend in the making. Dig the awesome looks and bold paint colours. Last of all, get yourself one!
