American styling has filtered through to the way the smart new Ford Ranger Diesel looks, and it’s attractive and chunky – I guess the sort of way that appeals to the blokes. Nice and big is the feel of the 2016 Ford Ranger Diesel. The wing mirrors are chrome finished, and they also have the indicators set into the wing mirrors as well – which is a nice safety feature. The chrome grille, chrome side bars and 17-inch wheels set the big Ranger off well. When you’re out in the bush and tackling some scrubby terrain, on some models the wing mirrors can be folded in to avoid getting hit by passing obstacles – this can be done at the push of a button.
Inside the new Ford Ranger there is plenty of space to accommodate the big lads. It actually sits at the top for rear leg space in the double cab models. Steering wheel controls are nicely available to control a wide range of functions including the instrument display where you can bring up the rev counter or fuel consumption read-out. The semi-digital instrument display is a winner. Overall the minimalist look of the new Ford Ranger dash looks great. Simple climate air-conditioning controls in the centre of the dash are very easy to use.
Comfortable seats for the long haul are a feature of the way the Ford Ranger Diesel models all handle the long hours easily. Steering wheel adjustment is up and down for getting set nicely for driving. The seats are multi-adjustable for getting the perfect fit. Luxurious is not something you used to be able to say about the tradies work tool, but with the Ford Ranger you have loads of nice features to make the day pleasurable. A rocking big sound system puts out some great sounds, while the electric windows, auxiliary input jacks, cruise control, Lane Assist and Pre-collision systems all make for a pretty sophisticated drive. When you consider the number of premium safety features that are on-board the new Ford Ranger Diesel trucks, the level of equipment does put this right out front again. Six airbags are standard.
Out on the deck of the Ford Ranger, the size of tray can easily fit a wooden pallet – which is a handy feature for the hard working tradies out there. Also the Ford Ranger Diesel can handle a ton of weight on the tray of the double cab models. A tray liner on the Ford Ranger models is a standard feature on the double cab models, while a waterproof 12 V socket is neatly enclosed on the double cab deck – a really useful feature for when you take some electronic accessories to the building site or picnic area. Models with a sports bar also house cargo lights. The high-end Ford Ranger Diesel models boast full leather interiors, a large touch screen, and satellite navigation for getting yourself in and around the urban jungle.
Out on the road, the power from the 3.2-diesel is evident. There is loads of torque for acceleration and hill work. The smooth ride and steering makes for a pleasurable drive on-and-off the road. Handling is at the top of the class and the level of control is fantastic. Compared with the 2.8-litre Toyota Hilux, which puts out 130 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque, the Ford Ranger has the five-cylinder, 3.2 turbo-diesel engine with 147 kW of power and 470 Nm of torque. The engine has been around for a wee while, but it is a proven workhorse and very strong on the power front. Linked up to the six-speed automatic, the Ford Ranger Diesel is quite something. There is also the smaller 2.2 turbo diesel option out there that has 118 kW and 385 Nm of torque.
Fuel efficiency for the 2.2-litre is excellent, while you can expect around 10 litres/100 km fuel use for your usual everyday work trips in the 3.2-litre models.
When up against the competition from the well-known Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton, the Ford Ranger packs a plentiful punch of power, luxury and rugged reliability. Some might say the front end of the 2016 Ranger looks less aggressive than the earlier model, but it horses for courses and I like the overall Ranger design.
