Foton Aumark

We’re getting used to seeing Foton models around Australia.  There are a wide range of Foton products, and one worth mentioning is the Foton Aumark Truck.  This is not your “ute” sort of truck in the Toyota Hilux sense of the word, but a really solid and reliable small truck that rivals Mitsubishi’s Canter series or Isuzu’s N series light trucks.  So if you need to step up from a Hilux or Ranger and need the higher load-carrying capacity of an Aumark Truck, then this might just be the wise choice.  Not that expensive to buy, the Foton Aumark has some great credentials for adding a tough, powerful workhorse to your business.

Five different models are available, and Foton stand by their products with a new Truck warranty that includes full cover for three years or 160,000 km – whichever comes first.  Foton can give this impressive warranty because they run their Aumark series of light trucks with Cummins engines – known for their power and reliability.

So let’s take a closer look at the range and start with the 2018 Foton Aumark 4×2 full size Pantech truck.  This is a small container truck ideal for carrying the likes of crates of vegetables, bread, milk or what-have-you.  You are all ready to go with a large side access door on the left side of the container and a set of barn doors at the rear of the vehicle.  There are three container sizes – the largest being a 5.150 m length x 2.4 m width x 2.0 m height for the container’s internal dimensions.  This will be able to swallow some serious cargo.  You can equip the Pantech with a choice of two tail gate lifters both of which can lift 1 tonne – no worries.  A rear camera and air deflector are some handy options to consider.  Internal tie rails made of galvanized steel come as standard.

Another Foton Aumark model includes the Cab Chassis model.  This is a handy truck with a GVM of 8500 kg.  Now you won’t be able to match that in your Hilux or Ford Ranger!  Powered by the 3.8-litre Cummins turbo-diesel engine you have all the power you will need for demanding work.  Rated at 115 kW there is heaps of power for getting the job done, and the torque is impressive right from the word go.  Linked to a new 6-speed ZF gearbox, the shifting is smooth and very well gated for heavy load carrying.  Slightly smaller Cab Chassis models are available with a rating of 4490 and 6500 kg GVM.  They still run with the powerful 3.8-litre Cummins motor.

If you require a back section with a steel or alloy tray, then Foton Aumark Silverback trucks do two sizes: the Aumark BJ1079 (bigger) and the Aumark BJ1051 (smaller).  The larger Silverback runs with the 3.8-litre Cummins diesel and 6-speed ZF transmission.  The smaller Silverback uses a slightly less powerful 110 kW Cummins engine that links a 5-speed ZF gearbox to the running gear.  This package is cheaper to buy but just as robust.

Cummins are proven engines that have built a decent reputation for power and reliability over the years.  On the road there is no shortage of power, and the Aumark cruises smoothly and with little vibration.  At legal road limits the Foton Aumark light truck series is really nice to drive, as far as trucks go.  There is definitely good power in reserve, even when full laden; and the gearing is such that top gear can haul from 70 km/h no problem.  Foton light trucks feature an effective exhaust brake which is operated via a column-mounted stalk.

Equipped with ABS braking, and large brakes front and rear, the stopping power for the Foton Aumark is good when heavily laden – just what you want in consistent fashion.

Sometimes the thought of driving a light truck instead of the more common ute can be a bit daunting, however the Foton Aumark makes the step up really easy, and you even get one of the tighter lock-to-lock steering turns on the market.  Heading into town with tight parking and narrow driveways is made easy in the Aumark.  On the open road, the Aumark truck series sits nicely on the road, and the engineers have ensured there is little vagueness in the steering, as can sometimes be present in trucks, especially in the straight-ahead position.
