With an 8-speed sports automatic and an option of a 2.5 or 3.5 litre petrol motor, the stylish new Genesis G80 Sedan has been designed to please. Right from the outset, the artistic styling and elegant lines are classy and elegant, and well-balanced for a big swooning saloon. Interestingly, the man who designed the Bentley Continental GT also designed the Genesis G80, so the flowing lines and big grille have a similar resemblance. Inside, the luxury is first-class, and comfort is at the forefront of every new Genesis G80 Sedan’s drive.
So what sort of car is a match for the newest Genesis G80 Sedan? If you are thinking along the lines of the latest luxury sedans from Mercedes Benz’s E-Class, Audi’s A7 Sportback, or BMW’s 5 Series, then you’re bang on the money. The G80 Sedan is every bit as good as one of these, and it comes from the proven and popular South Korean Hyundai design team, except from its high-end Genesis squad, and a cut above the standard Hyundai brand of cars – not that there’s anything wrong with these. Having a luxury brand is not a new thing because Toyota has been doing this with their Lexus luxury line of cars, as has Nissan with Infiniti, and Honda with Acura.
Thus, the G80’s onboard technology is abundant, and features like pre-setting the cabin temperature via your phone a few minutes before climbing onboard and driving off is standard. In South Korea you can pay for your fuel using the car’s entertainment system, a feature that will likely be available to the rest of the world in the future. I do think it’s healthier to get out and walk and to meet real people, but I guess if you’re running late this feature may come in handy.
Wireless smartphone charging and connection is standard. An awesome 21–speaker sound system will blow your mind, and the car comes with a powered boot-lid. The digital driver’s display can be set in 2- or 3-D mode, and the colour tones of the displays and interior lighting can be changed to your own tastes. Acoustic glass keeps the travel whisper quiet for the car’s occupants
A really cool feature is the G80’s augmented satellite navigation which uses a camera at the front of the car that sends the picture back to the 12-inch digital driver’s display or the touchscreen and then superimposes the directions over the picture being fed to the screen via the camera. All pretty simple, but a clever and likable feature. Fully leather appointed, and with all sorts of premium materials throughout the cabin, console and dash, the attention to detail in the new Genesis G80 Sedan is outstanding. Pleated seats, accented stitching, a choice of a variety of materials (wood, leather and other soft touch materials), textures and trims, all add up to make the cabin a very plush and stylish place to be.
Rear seat passengers will enjoy plenty of space as well as reclining and sliding individual seats, their own infotainment screens, and even their own zoned climate controls. The seats throughout the car are ventilated and heated, as well as being massaging (an Ergo Motion feature), and there is ample connection ports for phones and other electronic devices in the back seats as well as at the front.
At present, two turbocharged petrol engines are offered in Australia: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder ULP or a 3.5-liter V6 ULP. The 2.5 is a rear-wheel-drive model (RWD) with 224 kW and as much as 422 Nm of torque, while the 3.5 V6 has AWD and is a bit more powerful and quicker in all situations. To give you an idea of how fast, the 2.5-litre RWD G80 Sedan runs through the 0-100 km/h dash in a smidgeon over 6 seconds, and it will accelerate from 80-120 km/h in 4.6 seconds at its quickest. Both engines deliver plentiful power and smooth refinement. The adaptive cruise control system will artificially learn your driving style and adapt itself to your way of driving.
A very comfortable ride quality is a shining area for the beautiful Genesis G80 Sedan. It uses the camera out the front of the car to read the road ahead and adjust its suspension accordingly as it proceeds over road undulations and bumps. BMW, Mercedes and Audi flagships all boast this sort of technology, too.
The 2022 Genesis G80 Sedan is also very safe and comes loaded with active safety features. You can even get the car to change lanes on or exit the motorway by itself, an impressive safety feature, particularly if you are a useless driver. Also, if you are hopeless at parking the car yourself, it will do it all for you! It also has clever headlights that can be on full beam for the driver but be seen as being on dip mode by oncoming traffic – now that’s a useful clever feature!
There will be an electric (EV) model in the not too distant future, but for now the G80 Sedan will have to visit the gas pump for fuel. A class act and very stylish, the Genesis G80 Sedan almost feels more exotic than a BMW or Mercedes equivalent, particularly here in Australia.
