Big, luxurious, and loaded with technology, the brand new Genesis GV80 is making quite the statement in the luxury SUV world. Of course, if you haven’t yet caught up with the news, Genesis is Hyundai’s flagship brand, in much the same way Lexus is Toyota’s luxury brand. You can expect big things from a vehicle like the GV80 SUV because, well, it is big for a start; it’s a size large. You also get the very best of everything Hyundai stands for, making this an exciting new product from the highly successful South Korean motoring manufacturer.
One of the first decisions you have to make is whether you’ll opt for the five-seat or seven-seat version. The seven-seater costs a bit more, and neither of these is cheap; it is, after all, a classy high-end SUV. Both versions have a very plush interior and come pre-loaded with all of the latest gadgetry – whether you’ll need it or not.
Climb into the driver’s seat, and you recline into a lovely big Nappa leather chair that would be as comfortable as any Lazy-Boy chair in your lounge. Electronic adjustment moves to set you up behind the height and reach adjustable steering wheel for a perfect fit so that you can get on with the job of driving in total comfort. The dash is beautifully crafted and fitted together using very nice materials like black oak and soft touch leather. There is also nicely performed accented stitching that combines with a sprinkling of chrome and other classy trims to give you a quality feel that you’ll only ever experience in a high-end brand.
Sitting atop the centre dash is a 14.5-inch display screen. You can utilise this via voice activation, touch, handwriting gestures, and even with some of the buttons and switches on the steering wheel. The swivel knob that you’ll find down on the centre console is also perfectly designed to flick through the menus and select what you want on the big screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard features. The digital driver’s display is beautifully clear and easy on the eye.
There are two trims available: Premium and Luxury. Premium has LED lights, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated leatherette seats, and the full 14.5-inch dash display screen. Head for the Luxury Line, and 22-inch alloys, wooden interior trim, a premium leather interior and seats, and heated rear seats are in the deal. All models boast the 21-speaker sound system!
Those people sitting in the second row seats will appreciate reclining seats with a sliding forward and back function. Luxury Line models get these exact features done electronically as well as an electronic window blind. Space in the second row of any of the Genesis GV80 SUV models is outstanding, so leg and head room is extremely good. Seven-seater models do offer reasonable space back in the third row, though I think the class-leading Land Rover Discovery still plays top dog in that area. You can also get the Genesis GV80 with a panoramic glass roof, which is exceptionally classy, adding an exquisite ambience to the already elegant cabin. A six-seat option is also available by request.
Open up the powered tailgate (you can do this via a clever little button at the base of the rear wiper), and the five-seater boot has a whopping 735 litres behind the upright second row. 2152 litres is available if you fold the second row down flat. This is more than you’ll find in equivalent BMW and Mercedes Benz models, though the Audi A8 has a little more cargo room. Underfloor storage is also present in the new Genesis GV80 SUVs with 5-seats. In the 7-seat models, this underfloor space is taken up with the third row seats being folded down into it.
Three powerful engines are available, all capable of towing a braked trailer up to 2750 kg. The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel can fling the big SUV up to 100 km/h from a standstill in 7.5 seconds. The 2.5-litre petrol variant is smooth but a tad down on torque compared with the diesel version. Then there is the 3.5T petrol which can run like a scared squirrel, boasting 279 kW of power and as much as 530 Nm of creamy, smooth torque. At present there is no hybrid tech, perhaps somewhat surprising. It would be good to see a mild-hybrid or a PHEV variant of the latest Genesis G80 SUV, given that Hyundai build a great Hybrid Santa Fe and the electric IONIQ models. However, maybe it’s still in the pipeline and the time isn’t right for them yet. Fuel consumption for the two engines is on the thirstier side, the diesel being the more frugal of the two. Being in the league for buying a big new luxury SUV will mean that fuel consumption is probably something that you’ll tick further down the priority list, maybe I’m just assuming too much there.
The nice looking Genesis GV80 SUV has a nice ride, and it does so quietly. The larger alloys take a bit of the cushioning out of the ride quality, however with the camera surveying the road surface ahead of you, the suspension can adjust accordingly to optimise the ride. There is on demand 4×4 capability on three of the four models, which makes this a pretty useful SUV when the going gets tough. The base model 2.5T is RWD only. All G80 SUVs have a 5-star ANCAP safety rating watching your back.
This new 2022 Genesis GV80 SUV may not be a cheap vehicle to buy, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised that the all-new luxury SUV undercuts all the big, established luxury alternatives even with its sensational levels of equipment and technology.
