Whisper-quiet EVs don’t come much better looking than in the shape and style of Genesis’s new G80 EV Fastback. A real head turner on any day of the week, this is a Fastback for the fast lane and an EV fit for a king.
Though unlikely to cost a king’s ransom for those who are genuinely in the luxury EV market, the new G80 EV Fastback is nonetheless pricey and is a direct a rival to the BMW i5, Tesla Model S, and Mercedes-Benz EQE. For those who prefer ULP, the facelifted petrol versions are also available as well.
The main takeaways for the 2024 Genesis G80 EV Fastback buyers are that these versions boast a larger battery, offer a whole lot of equipment upgrades, and also bring a longer wheelbase (longer by 130 mm) for even more occupant space and comfort (and also to accommodate the larger battery pack). Now a 95.4 kWh battery pack instead of the previous 87.2 kWh unit comes as standard, giving the new Fastback model an improved range. Though an official Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) hasn’t been set for the new model with larger battery, Genesis suggest that it should generally add around 20 km to the official 520 km range of the outgoing model.
A pair of 136 kW electric motors are used to power the luxury EV, one for each axle, the total power output of 272 kW being a juicy combination of power matched to 700 Nm of torque. This is all thrust out to an AWD platform, making the big Fastback a capable performer. Given the full right foot treatment, the suave Genesis G80 Fastback can hustle from a standstill through to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. This all happens very quickly, and yet the whisper-quiet interior mutes the speed with which this serious pack of performance is unleashed outside. Highway cruising is superbly steady, comfortable, and very quiet. Perhaps another useful performance figure might be the 2.8 seconds that it requires for the Genesis G80 EV Fastback to get from 80–112 km/h. The car’s top speed is 240 km/h.
As the majority of EVs spend a lot of time in an urban environment, the big Fastback is happy to mix it with congestion. The satellite navigation is always working to take you A to B via the quickest and best route. But when the time calls for being patient, then the Genesis G80 Fastback is an EV you’ll like to be travelling in. And if you find that the car park is a little bit of a squeeze, then let the driverless remote car parking feature do it all for you.
Inside the cabin, you’ll notice what is probably the most obvious change to the Genesis G80 EV Fastback’s interior: the brand-new updated single 27.0-inch (width) organic LED (OLED) display. This digital display is operated via a circular controller on the centre console as well as with buttons on the steering wheel and voice commands. Obviously, it’s also touch-sensitive as well. A new organic LED technology is now used, which is a carbon-based material for displaying the data. This replaces the previous twin set screens, one 12.3-inch and one 14.5-inch display, which used small-point light sources.
The big digital mono-display covers the driver’s need for instrumentation and travel data, as well as carrying the task of controlling the array of infotainment functions. Built-in satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone compatibility, and charging capability, along with clear digital radio surround sound all make for a special experience. Maybe less noticeable, but still a feature all occupants will enjoy, is the full set of electrified seats. The rear seats are also now fully reclining and boast leg rests, along with a seat-position memory function. Back seat passengers can while away the time with their very own digital touchscreen. This is a space where they can watch stuff, play, or communicate as desired. This limousine is rather nice, particularly if the digital world is what floats your boat. But even if you aren’t doing online stuff, the Fastback is immensely satisfying for travel.
Some of the other features you’ll find in the G80 EV are things like the three-zone automatic climate control air-conditioning, a power rear sunshade, a microfibre headliner, remote parking assistance where the car will park itself, an upgraded blind-spot camera system, automated emergency braking for reverse as well as driving forward, and a newly tweaked driver attention monitor.
Genesis has very cleverly swapped the gasoline engine for an all-electric platform powertrain, making the Fastback G80 EV a superb luxury sedan. Though the luggage carrying capacity is down on the petrol-powered alternative, the EV still offers 424 litres of cargo space. What a special EV machine!
