You may be looking for a reasonably priced ute and have already had a look at the latest LDV T60 PRO, SsangYong Musso ELX or the Mitsubishi Triton GLX. These are great competitively priced utes but have you noted that Great Wall has just come out with their rather tidy-looking GWM Ute. GWM offer three options of their new Cannon ute that can be bought for between $32–42k. The Chinese automotive brand, formerly known as Great Wall, offers a range of reliable workhorses that can even challenge the more expensive Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Isuzu Ute D-Max utes. Comfortable, economical, and safe, the 2021 GWM Ute is well worth a look.
As far as utes go, this one has a clean design that looks tough, smart and practical. The Cannon come in a base model 4×2 version, or two 4×4 variants. Colours for the new ute’s exterior are Blue Sapphire, Crystal Black, Scarlet Red, Pittsburgh Silver and Pure White.
Space throughout the cabin is a strong GWM ute attribute. Those in the back seats will appreciate a decent level of leg and head room, the seat design is comfortable and durable. Leather is available on the top of the range models. Front seat comfort is nice and supportive, allowing for long haul trips to be travelled, no problems. About the cabin are some handy storage spaces, and you can even pop your coffee up in a cup holder or put your bottle of water in the door bin holders.
Technology on the inside of a 2021 GWM Ute is very good. Aux input points, USB sockets and Bluetooth communication are standard on all models. Even the big multi-function control screen features on the base model. A 4-speaker stereo (6 speakers on the 4×4 models) delivers nice audio and all models come with a speed zone reminder, road sign recognition, a trip computer, a tyre pressure sensor, distance control, a pollen filter for clean cabin air, a starter button, a sunglass holder compartment, and a vanity mirror for the front seat passenger. The top of the range has heated seats in the front, and both 4×4 GWM Utes get climate control instead of air-conditioning on the base model. Both systems blow nice cool air through the cabin on a hot summers day or warm air on a cold day. The top model, at around $42k, also boasts voice recognition.
Under the bonnet sits a 129 kW engine with plenty of torque that peaks at 400 Nm – you can even enjoy strong grunt low down in the rev range. The powerful 2.0-litre turbo-diesel has recently been updated and offers more power and improved accelerator response. All the models use a slick eight-speed automatic gearbox to get the power down, and there is a full-time dual-range 4WD available for the two models with 4×4, so this is a serious off-roading machine. You really do have a good, robust ute that is ready for work, and the stats say that you can pull up to 3000 kg braked or 750 kg unbraked. You can chuck 1050 kg up on the rear deck of the 4×4 models.
All the models are safe bets, and they deliver a strong list of top safety features. Safety aids include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert. ABS (antilock brakes), brake assist, an electric park, electronic stability control and traction control all make there way into the 2021 GWM Ute. An alert for any potential collision is a nice addition, as well as collision avoidance systems that make this an excellent buy. Blind spot sensors, a brake emergency display with hazards and stoplights are standard. A camera – front and side are found in the base model, whereas there is a 360 degree camera coverage on the two 4x4s. Pedestrian avoidance with braking, hill descent and hill holding complete the deal. All models come with automatic (light sensitive) headlights with electric level adjustment. They are LED headlights, boasting a see me home function. You also get DRLs, and fog lamps front and rear. A five-star ANCAP safety result is reportedly in the offering, while the seven-year/unlimited km warranty is very reassuring.
If you opt for the 2.0DT Diesel 8-speed automatic 4×4, you should get under 10 litres/100 km as an average fuel consumption figure. The 2.0DT Diesel 8-speed automatic with RWD should have you returning under 9 litres/100 km efficiency.
The new GWM Ute range includes the base Cannon, mid-range Cannon-L and top-spec Cannon-X, all of which massively undercut the segment’s top-sellers. Not too bad then? For sure!
