One of the coolest vehicles in the GWM line-up is the new GWM Tank 300. Even its name captures my imagination, with plenty of my brainwave power being stimulated when encountering the word Tank. How big is this vehicle? Does it conquer mountains, sands, and riverbeds? What engine is used for delivering power to the wheels? Is it bomb proof? Let’s take a look…
What a machine! The Tank 300 is great to look at. I love the presence it brings on the road. The moment you see its chunky outline, round headlights with a horizontal DRL bar running through the centre, flared wheel arches, big rims and rubber, its solid bumpers, and even the cool colour choices you can choose from, it’s a winner for me. Fossil Grey is the standard colour. Then for an extra $595, Dusk Orange, Lunar Red, Crystal Black, or Pearl White are offered as exterior colour alternatives.
Presently, two models of the GWM Tank 300 are offered. The GWM Tank 300 Lux Hybrid is the base model and offers features which include: 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and taillights, DRLs, a sunroof, and a two-piece under-bodyguard for off-road excursions. Inside the well laid out cabin are comfy ‘Comfort-Tek’ leather seats. The driver’s seat is powered and offers plenty of adjustment for a range of driver body shapes to get comfortable. You get ambient interior lighting to make the Lux Hybrid look just the way you want with plenty of scope for an impressive cabin experience. The steering wheel is made of microfibre and leather, where behind it you’ll enjoy a nice clear 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system is situated centre dash, and via this system you can access DAB+ digital radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Smartphone connection and the 9-speaker audio system does a great job of staying connected and pumping out some nice sounds. Front and rear USB ports are present for other portable electronic devices. Front and rear parking sensors make parking the Tank 300 in confined spaces a breeze. Automatic folding exterior mirrors are heated, and there is a tyre pressure monitoring system along with Crawl Control and Tank Turn as standard features as well. Along with the USB ports, there are 12V power outlets in the front of the cabin as well as in the luggage area.
If you opt for the 2023 GWM Tank 300 Ultra Hybrid version, then you’ll get a snazzy upgrade on the Tank’s alloys, which take them to a wider set of 18-inch rims. You’ll also get the full GWM Nappa leather seating, where the front seats can be both heated and cooled. In the Ultra model, the seats look amazing with their patterned and textured stitching. The driver seat is electrically adjustable and has a massage function. The leather-wrapped steering wheel also has a heating function – should you ever need that in Australia. The Ultra model also boasts wireless phone charging and connection, an Infinity 9-speaker audio upgrade, and more ambient interior lighting colour and options.
The new 2023 GWM Tank 300 is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol-hybrid motor. There is plenty of power and torque for doing the business dealings with any rugged AWD 4×4 drivetrain. The turbocharged 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder ICE has a maximum of 180 kW of power, peaking between 5500 – 6000 rpm. The full 380 Nm torque output from the internal combustion engine can be accessed between 1700 – 4000 rpm. But this level of output is also paired with a 78 kW/268 Nm electric motor for even more combined hybrid performance. This hybrid combination of power and performance is said to return around 9-10 litres/100 km for an average fuel consumption result.
Off-roading is part of the skillset with this vehicle, and the power is sent through to the AWD system via a 9-speed ‘Hybrid Automatic Transmission’ out to a ‘torque-on-demand’ full-time 4WD system, thus you have plenty of traction on tap, particularly when the electronically controlled front and rear differential locks are activated. You get a crawling mode for any seriously rugged terrain (like riverbed boulders). A Tank Turn function is also present which reduces the turning circle for those tight off-road spaces (like a dead-end on a forestry track high up on a steep hill face). With an approach angle of 33 degrees and a departure angle of 34 degrees, you can tackle hairy terrain with confidence. The Tank 300 is a rugged, body-on-frame SUV, so totally good to go for serious off-road work and play, and you also get a handy braked towing capacity of 2500 kg.
When it comes to safety, the brand new GWM Tank 300 is fitted with an autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system capable of functioning at highway speeds, and a lane support system (LSS) with lane keep assist (LKA) and emergency lane keeping (ELK). A speed assistance system (SAS) is standard, where the system can identify the local speed limit and allows the driver to set the speed accordingly. The Tank 300 is also built tough, and it has been designed to protect its occupants very well should things turn a bit pear shaped. There are loads of airbags, and even a roll stability system, so the full 5-Star ANCAP safety awarded to the GWM Tank 300 is a worthy result.
A brand new mid-size 2023 GWM Tank 300 spans 4760 mm in length and boasts a 2750 mm wheelbase. Boot space is comparable with other similar-sized SUVs, so it should make for a great vehicle for families, and definitely for those of us who like to venture further off the beaten track. Priced from around $56k, and offering a 7-year/unlimited km warranty and 5-years of roadside assistance, the brand new GWM Tank 300 is all set to be a new sensation in the mid-size suburban SUV/serious off-road SUV market space.
