Two models are offered, and they are priced around $35k for the RWD and $45k for the 4×4.  This makes them both affordable and very useful.  The 2024 GWM Ute Light Truck Cannon L CC is the more luxurious of the two, so it gets things like front park assist with cameras, folding electric mirrors, a six-speaker stereo, a driver’s seat with a heating function, a leather-bound steering wheel, and a rear window that has extra-dark privacy glass.  But the major difference comes down to the 4×4 system that this model has as a standard feature.  The GWM Ute Light Truck Cannon L CC 4WD will be the model of choice should you need to traverse off-road terrain from time to time. 

What the cheaper new GWM Ute Light Truck Cannon CC model boasts is rear wheel drive and slightly more efficiency, and that’s with all the rest of the goodies that come with either model.  Both versions are nicely kitted out with decent features to keep their owners happy for the long haul.  Air conditioning (climate controlled on the L CC), park distance control, leather-like upholstery for the seats, a speed zone reminder with road sign recognition system, Bluetooth connection and communications, auxiliary USB inputs, a coloured infotainment system, electric mirrors, LED headlights (automatic), DRLs, fog lamps, 18-inch alloys, side and rear cameras (the L CC model also has a front camera), and see me home lights.

Safety is important regardless of the price, so GWM make sure that this workhorse ute comes with plenty of excellent safety features.  Hill holder assist, hill descent control, EBD, alerts/warnings for forward collision, brake emergency display (hazard/stoplights), side cameras, collision mitigation, crash avoidance and control, pedestrian detection and avoidance with braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and active assist lane keeping.  Traction control and electronic stability control are also standard features.  Pre-tensioning seatbelts and airbags are also part of the Cannon Ute’s forte.

More than capable of taking the rough with the smooth, the brand new and stylish GWM Cannon Light Truck Ute (RWD and 4×4) looks right tackling Outback roads and gravel.  Getting dusty is what this truck has been built for, and towing up to 3000 kg is part and parcel of a Cannon’s day at work.  Its payload limit for the rear deck is good for over a tonne, so it’s right ready to carry that tank full of water for the spray unit or for fire-fighting duty. 

Both models run with an 8-speed sports automatic gearbox which is superbly mated to the 2.0-litre diesel’s free-revving nature and strong torque across the entire rev range (maximum of 400 Nm).  Boasting 120 kW, this may not be the most powerful diesel ute on the market, but the GWM Cannon Ute feels grunty enough and can happily return 9-10 litres per 100 km with the right driving style and in the right conditions.
