Great Wall Steeds are sturdy and comfortable ute/light trucks from the new Chinese manufacturer “Great Wall”. The first shipments of Great Wall Steeds are quick to impress with their smooth engines and rugged underpinnings. Two engines are offered: one a diesel unit and the other a petrol. Most will opt for the Steed Diesel, as this is the engine that most relates to the rugged nature of a ute. So without further ado, let’s take a look at one.
First of all, the new Great Wall Diesel Ute has an appealing design that is upright, chunky and strong. A bold front nose houses a large grille and some shapely headlights. Certainly there is no face lost here – the looks are attractive. Out the rear, the big tray is finished with a tough plastic deck and a large bumper with inbuilt steps. Similar to the striking Isuzu ute, the Great Wall Steed has a stylish tail light arrangement, too. Dual Cab models look great with the sports alloy bar on the deck out the back. Side bars and a nice set of mags complete a sporty, modern dual cab exterior design.
Open up the doors and there is plenty of room to climb aboard. Seats are comfy, and the “eco leather” upholstery looks smart. There is plenty of grey plastic in the dash area, however the switchgear design is stylish and easy-to-read and easy-to-use. In the front you get front seats that are electronically adjustable and heated. Leather door trimming looks upmarket and you even get a leather steering wheel that houses audio, Bluetooth and cruise control switchgear. Flip the visors down and you’ll find a large vanity mirror – a hit with the ladies. A handy 12 V power outlet is available for powering additional electronic gear.
As far as carrying stuff goes, the big tray is over 1.5 metres long and is 1.46 metres wide. You can carry one tonne in the tray, too. Inside the cab is an array of storage areas to hold sunglasses, drinks, bottles and other flimflam. At over 5.3 meters long, this is a spacious and roomy ute that competes well against the Hilux, Navara and Amarok rivalry. It’s probably not quite up to their standards yet, but it’s not too far off. And, when you consider the price, the Great Wall Steed Diesel ute is very good value for money.
2WD and 4WD options are there, and when using the 4WD Diesel version, the tall ground clearance and short overhangs make it a handy off-road vehicle. Diesel power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that delivers strong torque throughout the revs. Linking the 110 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque, the six-speed manual happily flicks between the gears for optimum performance and efficiency.
Daytime running lights are standard, while the electronically adjustable halogen headlamps light up the road nicely at night. Loaded with some serious safety equipment, the Great Wall Steed Diesel Ute is very well catered for in this department. Standard safety features include: ESP(Electronic Stability Program), BA (Brake Assistance), TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System), a reverse radar, dual front airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, height adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners, a driver seatbelt unfastening warning system, a 3-point rear centre seatbelt and a child safety lock. These features help lead the way forward for the Great Wall Steed.
For a handy ute that offers plenty of options, the Great Wall Steed range needs to be looked at. Great Wall does have a long warranty available on their products, as well.
