So you’re on the lookout for a well-priced dual cab Ute? Here is something different, and definitely something new to Australia and anywhere else outside of China. We are looking at the Great Wall Steed Petrol Ute, and I have to say that as a workable, tough 4×2 Ute this has to be a bargain. There is a useful tray out the back to put all your work stuff in, while inside there is plenty of room for adults in front and rear seats.
Though crash tests haven’t, as yet, put the Great Wall Steed to the test, the modern safety features include airbags at the front and sides – as good as you’ll find anywhere in Ute world. Steed models all come with front disc brakes and drum rears. ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), wing mirror indicators and height-adjustable seatbelts are standard for each Steed model. A Bosch Electronic Stability Program (ESP) comes as a standard feature on all dual cabs across the range, and this system works with the anti-lock braking, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Traction Control System and Hill Hold Control system for optimum traction and control. Rear parking sensors are only available on the top-of-the-range models.
Each new Great Wall Steed dual cab comes standard with Comfort-Tek seats all round, including heated seats for the driver and front passenger. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent, and the electric driver’s seat and four-way adjustable steering wheel makes for easy ergonomics for all sorts of body shapes and sizes. The steering wheel incorporates multiple functions including cruise control, bluetooth, and audio controls. The dials for the speedo and rev counter are very clear and easy to read, while there is a very informative in-dash LCD screen that displays 13 functions including tyre pressure monitoring (TPMS), instantaneous fuel consumption, driving range, average speed, journey time, and service interval reminder indicators.
This is a dual-cab Ute that will have a secondary job of carting the family around from time-to-time. As far as comfort in the rear goes, the space in the rear is good for tall adults. A one-ton payload for the rear deck and a 2-ton braked towing capacity is a useful addition for when the boat or builder’s trailer needs to be moved from A-to-B.
While not the most powerful Ute on the market, the new Great Wall Steed dual-cab offers strong and willing performance from a 2.4-litre petrol engine that uses Delphi electronic ignition to deliver smooth response. Delivering 100 kW of power and 205 Nm of torque, the engine, via the five-speed manual transmission, makes easy work of any tough task. The light-shifting manual gearbox shifts nicely, while the Steed has a solid and grippy feel on the road. Typically ‘Ute-ish’, the Steed rides with a firm chassis and the bumps can be felt from time to time. This is easy fixed with a few 40 kg cement bags in the back tray, where the ride settles down nicely and becomes a little softer.
There are diesel models, too; and it’s here you’ll find a 4×4 option.
No reliability issues seem to be of note, and each year Great Wall sell over 100,000 of these Utes in China. Looks for the Great Wall Steed are attractive, and I can think of a few less appealing designs that are out there on the market. So, if you want a 4×2 double cab Ute for under $25k, then I suggest you put the new Great Wall Steed Ute on your list of ‘must sees’. Great Wall boasts the longest warranty on the Ute market, so be in to win here.
