2024 Honda CR-V

Honda has gone in all guns a-blazing and has totally redesigned the new CR-V.  The 2024 model is bigger and comfier, and boasts hybrid power right across the range.  It is now in its sixth generation, so it has been somewhat of a stalwart in the SUV class since it began its sales in the mid-nineties.  Now a much bigger machine, and now with way more power, the 2024 Honda CR-V SUV is a likable vehicle.  It’s as solid as a rock, delivers decent performance, has excellent safety features, and is all set up for being a perfect family wagon.

Climb inside the 2024 Honda CR-V SUV and you notice that this is a machine that is made for the journey.  The seats are comfortable, and the space is great for even larger adults who are required to sit in the second-row seats.  The vehicle rides very nicely, where the bumps in the road are soaked up smoothly.  Out on the open road and at higher speeds, the 2024 CR-V is quiet and surefooted.  Front wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) models are available, though the AWD comes in luxury trim only.

The 2024 Honda CR-V range kicks off with the VTi X FWD version that is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo motor boasting 140 kW of power, 240 Nm of torque, and a CVT gearbox to get the job done.  Even in this guise, Honda gives the FWD base model a 600 kg unbraked trailer or a larger 1500 kg braked trailer tow rating, keeping in mind that even a Hilux or Land Cruiser can only tow a 750 kg unbraked trailer. This is an SUV with five roomy seats.

The next model is called the VTi X7, and it’s the same in every context as the VTi X but comes with a third row of seating that makes it capable of seating seven occupants – one of those being the driver, of course.

Next, just as it has been for decades with Honda, comes the more luxurious models with the letter “L” featured in the model’s name.  So, just like the previous two versions mentioned above, the VTi L and VTi L7 models come with FWD, boast the same engine and underpinnings, and can be prepared in 5 or 7 seat configuration; however, they feature all the added bells and whistles to go with it.  They get larger 18-inch rims with a snazzy pattern and a full-size spare, rain-sensing wipers, electric auto dipping mirrors, a dual-system exhaust, a driver’s seat with memory and a heating function, leather trimmings, and things like that.

Then comes the slightly more expensive Honda CR-V LX.  It boasts the same powertrain, equipment, and trim levels as the other luxury models, but this time comes with AWD.  And it’s the only AWD model in the line-up, so for those who like to make a habit of leaving the tarmac behind, then this is the one for you.

At the top of the tree, if hybridity and fuel economy are what count most, is the brand new Honda CR-V RS Hybrid, known as the Honda CR-V e-HEV RS Auto FWD SUV.  That’s a mouthful (can someone think of a good nickname for it?); however, it does mean that this comes with the fully hybridized motor that runs a 2.0-litre ULP unit in conjunction with an electric motor to fill in the power and economy gaps where possible.  This is an excellent set-up for commuting in and around town and in city environments, where the ULP motor can shut down at the lights and the electric motor can take over some of the duties.  This, of course, is great for gas milage and economy.  Moreover, 135 kW of power and 335 Nm of torque are part of the package here, and you can read up more on its own review page.

All new CR-Vs can average below 8 litres/100 km when driven sedately.  The hybrid version wins the race here, with an average of 6.4 litres a gettable number in the real world.

The 2024 Honda CR-Vs are comfortable, stylish in a subtle way, and offer good cargo space.  There are 11 airbags strategically located throughout the new Honda CR-V’s cabin; that’s five more than its predecessor.  All the other great safety features are there, so you’ll find things like ABS (antilock brakes), brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, collision avoidance forward and reverse, road sign displays and alerts, driver attention detection systems, lane departure warning, lane keeping with active assistance, parking assistance, active corner braking control, EBD (electronic brake force distribution), hill descent and hill holder control, and even a trailer sway control feature.  There are loads of other cool features as well, like GPS navigation, smartphone connection with wireless connections, charging ports, and, of course, more.

The 2024 Honda CR-V delivers all the right stuff in what is a family-friendly, comfortable, and safe modern SUV.
