Sounding like a particularly wild and ferocious cat, the all-new HSV Colorado SportsCat pounces passed the competition in fine form. Capable of strong performance, this foxy ute has some serious clout. When it comes to a night on the town, the Colorado SportsCat scrubs up perfectly, ready to impress and kitted out with all the latest driving aids and infotainment. Leather sports seats and plenty of exterior bling has the goods for drawing heads your way.
Under the svelte skin lies an advanced 2.8-litre turbo-diesel that is capable of 147 kW and 440 Nm of torque. The engine delivers great power that always feels lusty and purposeful, and it has one powertrain that is happy to pull a horse float or caravan across Australia. You can tow a braked trailer up to 3500 kg. Built tough, the Colorado SportsCat has uprated springs to cope with rugged terrain and the axle load limits are impressive; the rear being 1850 kg. Ground clearance is 251 mm, which is a handy height to handle off-road tasks easily. Entry and departure angles are quite high, thanks to a relatively long wheelbase and body length of 5345 mm. Coming with a tray that is 1484 mm long and 1534 mm wide, there is plenty of scope for carrying cargo on the back of the SportsCat.
Two models of HSV Colorado SportsCat are offered, the SportsCat + boasting meatier exterior detailing and trim. The SportsCat + has a bolder front, bigger grille, a sailplane sports bar design and flared wheel arches with plastic mouldings. Also boasting an increased ride-height gives the vehicle an obvious ground clearance advantage, while a distinctive bonnet bulge, splash tray combined with the other nice exterior features have the new HSV Colorado SportsCat models looking muscular and aggressive.
Both SuperCats have a removable hard tonneau lid with a rail for tie downs and racks. They also feature an HSV tuned sports suspension that hasn’t affected the vehicles comfort, thankfully. HSV claim that the front springs are 10 per cent stiffer to reduce roll and increase steering response. HSV engineers have also added a thicker 33 mm front anti-roll bar. For those Colorado SuperCat + owners who will be doing a lot of serious off-road work, then SupaShock dampers are available as an option for the truck.
If we take a look inside, the HSV Colorado SportsCat has some comfortable HSV seats that have been specially measured for the Colorado design. What you get is a nice blend of comfort and support, thanks to Windsor suede and perforated leather material along with decent side bolsters. Sweeping over the ute’s dash is a nice new suede finish with red stitching. This red stitching also features on the seats, steering wheel, and door trims.
Out-and-about, you feel cocooned in a strong and safe cabin. The HSV Colorado SportsCat sits nice and solidly on the road. The 20-inch Cooper tyres have great road holding capability, and they do offer some usable off-road ability, too. Decent brakes haul the HSV Colorado from speed with ease, and there are features like ABS, ESP and TC for added safety and control. The ESP system has been retuned and is said to kick in a little earlier but less intrusively. HSV has also equipped the Colorado SportsCat with a specific setting for 4×4 high when travelling over gravel roads to help keep the truck flowing smoothly. The SportsCat + comes with a four-piston AP Racing brake set-up on the front with 362 mm rotors. These are markedly larger than the 300 mm offered on the standard SportsCat model.
New HSV Colorado SportsCat models have features that are pretty-much the same as the current luxury Holden Colorado LTZ models have. So, you find that an 8.0-inch colour touch-screen with AppleCarPlay/Android Auto, satellite-navigation, DAB+ digital radio and premium seven-speaker sound, plus front/rear parking sensors, climate control and auto wipers are all standard kit. Safety is really good in a Colorado, and the features on offer include seven airbags, a reversing camera, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and ESC including Trailer Sway Control, Roll-over Mitigation, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Five-star safety is a Colorado feature, and so it’s nice to have the safety box ticked.
Expect to pay a bit above the $60k mark for both HSV Colorado SportsCat variants. You definitely have a ute with a difference, and you’ll be sure to stand out from the crowd in one of these. Hopefully we’ll see HSV adding some more power to the SportsCat package to compete with the likes of a VW Amarok V6.
