One of my favourite cars to review remains any car from the HSV line-up. Still the most Australian of all supercars, the HSV vehicles have led the way not only in Australia but out into the world and shown just how good an Australian can make a car go fast, look hot and provide all the best safety and luxury features. So with joy I look at the newest HSV model to roll onto the showroom floor: the Gen-F HSV Maloo GTS ute. One for the record books: the new GTS Maloo is the most powerful production ute in the world – not to mention the fastest!
More fun than Adam Hills, the HSV Maloo has the same driveline as the GTS sedan, so it really knows how to bring out the smiles. Of course, the most powerful HSV engine lies ready to pounce when the V8 rumble of the Gen-F Maloo gets down and dirty. The 6.2-litre LSA engine delivers a 740 Nm punch that tops out at 430 kW and makes the Maloo so quick.
The Gen-F Maloo has all the latest tricks in its mechanical make-up, all of it the same features as is found in the HSV GTS sedan package – all except for the sedan’s Magnetic Ride Control. Instead, the Maloo GTS gets a specially tuned suspension to match the Maloo’s performance potential and load carrying ability. You’ll find the Maloo has the same engine, transmission and six-piston AP brakes – just like the GTS sedan.
Not only does the new Maloo get the gruntiest engine and premium chassis set-up, the HSV ute comes with the more rounded Gen-F design. Extra chunky air intakes look hot and feed the LSA engine with plenty of fresh air, though one might say that the new headlight design is a little more gentlemanly than the meaner looks of the outgoing Maloo ute. Massive 20-inch wheels have a surefooted hold on any road surface, and with a limited slip-diff and stability control, you really do have a heck of a lot of control when driving under the pump.
New for the latest HSV Maloo is the new Jungle Green paint job for the exterior. Inside the new Maloo is a range of items to match the gorgeous and sexy interior. The GEN-F GTS Maloo features quality leather Performance seats, an enhanced instrument panel, a new instrument cluster, centre console, and a four-way electric adjustment feature for the driver’s seat. The Driver Preference Dial allows the driver to choose the favoured chassis set-up for their drive ahead. It’s easy to get comfortable in what is a very quick ute to drive. The multifunction leather wrap sports profile steering wheel boasts height and reach adjustment.
New to the mix of excellent features is the latest Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI) where you can access all the many technologies like sat-nav, audio and hands-free Bluetooth communications. The new GTS Maloo has an 8-inch high-resolution colour touch-screen along with a USB input point, a single CD player with the capability to play MP3 tracks, full iPod integration and a six- speaker audio system. The Head-Up Display provides the driver with important vehicle information including speedometer, tachometer and lateral G forces on the windscreen directly in front of them.
Extreme performance is what the 430 kW Maloo is all about. But the Gen-F HSV Maloo is still a large vehicle to place in tight spots, so with Front Park Assist feature, it’s very easy to park up the new Maloo in a congested shopping mall carpark. The only thing is that the styling of the new HSV GTS Maloo will draw most of the attention from admiring onlookers, so you have been warned!
