A lot of the HSV range have an attitude that could be summed up in the one word “brash”. This is not the case with the new HSV Gen-F Senator Signature. This sporty sedan is more refined in its looks – sleeker and less aggressive. Assertive, yes; sporty, yes; in your face, no.

This is not to say that the HSV Gen-F Senator Signature looks meek and mild. Those massive 20-inch wheels, the rear lip spoiler, the HSV side skirts, the quad exhaust outlets and the chrome-trimmed fender vents all let you know that this vehicle is all HSV.  One particularly attractive little styling feature is the tail lights. Now, HSV has had “ring of fire” styling for the rear lights for some time; this characteristic is brought up to date with LED lighting.

The HSV Gen-F Senator Signature is the most sophisticated of the HSV Gen-F range, and this is continued on the inside. The Performance sports seats trimmed in leather just beg to be settled down in, especially with the eight-way adjustments and memory for three drivers. The leather-wrapped gear selector looks very ergonomic and inviting indeed, especially as it sits beside the special Senator plate in the centre console. It’s a similar story with the multifunction steering wheel – your fingers simply itch to wray your hands around the leather. Other features to be enjoyed in the HSV Gen-F Senator Signature’s highly appointed interior include a Premium BOSE 9-speaker sound system, an 8-inch touch-sensitive display screen, Bluetooth prep, dual-zone climate control and a head-up display. There are also a host of handy driver aids, such as the side blind zone alert, the passive entry and remote start (automatic variant only), the automatic parking assist, forward collision alerts, the lane departure warning system, the hill start assist and hill control, the rain sensing wipers and more!

In the engine bay, it’s another story.  Not that either sophistication or smoothness is lacking!  However, it’s here that the HSV Gen-F Senator Signature can hold its own against all of the brasher HSV’s. The Senator Signature might not look as in your face or aggressive, but it’s certainly got a heart of fire and plenty of drive and, yes, aggression. This all comes courtesy of the L3 6.2-litre V8 powerplant that has enough gusto to ensure that this sophisticated-looking executive sedan really deserves the title of “muscle car” in spite of the more refined looks. If 340 k of power and 570 Nm of torque aren’t enough for you, you should be looking at jet aircraft instead.  This comes coupled up to a six-speed transmission, where the manual variant comes with launch control while the auto has remote start (as mentioned), active select and racing style paddle shifters. The paddle shifters aren’t the only race-bred features inside the HSV Gen-F Senator Signature, either. The brakes, for example, use a 4-piston system that was originally created for the NASCAR/V8 Supercars circuits.

Speaking of circuits, if you can get your HSV Gen-F Senator Signature down to a proper track to put it through its paces, you will be in for some fun. This is because this big beauty can be adjusted to make the most of it, what with the Competition Mode electronic stability control and the customization possible with the driver preference dial.  This latter feature allows the driver to tweak a lot of the electronic technology such as the ESC, the traction control, the manual-only launch control, the power steering, the magnetic ride control and the bimodal exhaust. Turn the dial clockwise to wind the performance right up, the send it back anticlockwise for regular city driving once you’ve finished having fun.  The Enhanced Driver Interface (which also displays on the 8-inch screen) also contains logged data for lap timing that uses GPS tracking – so you can see that this is a car designed for putting through its paces and sheer driving pleasure.

There is no doubt that the HSV Gen-F Senator Signature is a lot of fun to drive. The understated looks also make it even more fun. There’s nothing quite as amusing as coming alongside some overblown looking thing at the lights then leaving it for dead…
