If you ask me which cars I believe to have some of the most attractive modern lines and styling cues, you would hear the name Hyundai in my short list. The 2019 Hyundai Elantra is a strikingly good-looking sedan with strong performance, excellent space and a very competitive price tag. Four Hyundai Elantra sedans grace the show room floor, all looking impeccably attractive and polished. The Hatchback equivalent is called the i30, should you require the hatch shape in preference, but I like the suave, graceful Elantra sedan with its aggressive lines, new headlamps and cascading front grille. The restyled Elantra captures the new model’s wide, sporty stance beautifully.
The base model Elantra Go sits on a set of steel 15-inch rims and gets DRLs, automatic headlights with a welcome home feature, high mounted rear stop lights and comes in six vivid paint colours. Buying into the latest Hyundai Elantra is very reasonable, and with the Elantra Go you only need to let go of a smidgeon over $20k – not too painful at all!
Inside a new Hyundai Elantra Go the cloth interior seats are comfortable and smart to the eye. Map lights, interior lighting with a fade out timer, cup holders, a retractable sunglasses compartment, split folding rear seats, front and rear door bins that can take bottles and paperwork, a height adjustable driver’s seat, a 12V outlet in the front centre console, power windows front and rear, air-conditioning, a heated rear window demister, an anti-theft alarm, central locking, an engine immobiliser, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a 7-inch touchscreen, a sound system with six speakers, Aux and USB input with iPod compatibility, Bluetooth audio streaming, heated and power adjustable exterior mirrors, a driver information LCD cluster, cruise control, Hyundai Auto Link, steering wheel mounted controls, a height and rake adjustable steering column, ABS, BAS, EBD, Hill Start Assist, TCS, VSM, a rear view camera, front and side curtain airbags, impact sensing auto unlock doors, seat belt pretensioners, height adjustable front and rear head restraints, and ISOFIX complete the picture of this very well-equipped base model Elantra sedan.
Higher-end Elantras get 16 or 18-inch alloys with Michelin Pilot Sport rubber, LED DRLs, auto headlights, LED taillights, a sport exclusive front grille, side skirts, chrome exhaust tips, premium paints, a luggage net, leather seating and door trim, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, electronic front seats with memory, a wireless charging pad, sport front seats, a sunroof, a smart hands-free boot, dual-zone climate control, cooling and heating vents for rear seat passengers, heated front seats, accented stitching for seats and interior trims, door scuff plates, alloy pedals, Smart Key remote entry, an Infinity premium audio system with eight speakers, an ECM mirror, a digital speedometer, push button start, driving modes with three settings, paddle shifters, Blind Sport Collision warning, Driver Attention warning, forward collision avoidance, Lane Keep assist, High Beam Assist, rear cross-traffic collision warning and Park Assist. I guess you would say that luxury and sport play nicely together in a 2019 Hyundai Elantra Sport or Sport Premium. I do like the sport leather interior, which is gorgeous to look at and nice on a long journey.
The more high-tech safety features are available on the base model Go as an option. But, as you can tell, the new Hyundai Elantra is a very well appointed sedan that even in base model form the occupants are well catered for. And if you do opt for the high-end Sport and Sport Premium Elantra models you will find them priced around the $30k-or-less mark which is very reasonable, indeed.
There are two engines that power the 2019 Hyundai Elantra. The Hyundai Elantra Go and Hyundai Elantra Active models get the grunty 2.0-litre, 16 Valve, Double Overhead Cam (DOHC), Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) motor that pulls well and feels nice and relaxed when cruising at motorway speeds. 112 kW of power is on tap, while torque through the mid-range is strong. Maximum torque is 192 Nm at 4700 rpm. You have the option of connecting with this engine via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. The auto has a sequential manual mode should you desire to flick the car through the gears yourself. Fuel efficiency for this FWD sedan returns around 7 to 8 litres/100 km for your typical combined driving cycle.
Hyundai Elantra Sport and Sport Premium models get the high performance Gamma engine with turbo-charging. Responsive and lively, the 1.6-litre 16 Valve, Double Overhead Cam (DOHC), Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) motor puts out 150 kW of power at 6000 rpm and pulls with 265 Nm of torque available between 1500 and 4500 rpm. Sport models connect the engine power to the front wheels through either the six-speed manual gearbox or the 7-speed DCT (dry clutch) with sequential manual mode function.
There is definitely a sprightly feel to the Elantra Sport and Sport Premium sedans. They look aggressive on their wider rims and the exterior styling is even sharper with its sporty influence. These Sportier Elantras will run the 0-100 km/h sprint in around 7.5 seconds. Handling is taut and responsive, and the drive always feels controlled and safe.
Both motors run on 91 octane gasoline, making life at the pump more bearable.
The brand new 2019 Hyundai Elantra Sedan has sharp styling, is great value for money, boasts good performance, offers excellent space and pace for its class, and good fuel economy.
