Hyundai’s new i20 N is a sporty little beast with a Hatchback body, and it’s a hoot to drive. Classy looks like this will age well and look great anywhere you care to drive this sporty little number.
2022 is looking bright with new models like the latest Hyundai i20 N becoming available. The small car sits low to the ground, has a beautifully aerodynamic shape and funky body kit, as well as having some pretty cool features like red brake callipers, red side skirts and other red decaling.
Under the bonnet of the little Hyundai i20N lies a potent four-cylinder, 1.6-litre Turbo, UL-petrol engine putting out 150 kW of power @ 5500–6000 rpm and 275 Nm of torque @ 1750–4500 rpm. This amount of grunt sees the new Hyundai i20 N chase down the 0-100 km/h sprint in around 6.5 seconds, and it will scamper through the quarter mile in a bit over 14.5 seconds! The six-speed manual gearbox is a sweetie to use and sets the power delivery perfectly for each shift. You will be heard popping and crackling down the road, in fact on start-up, as the big bore exhaust outlet emits the punchy engine’s antics.
The new i20N goes like the wind and can really get a shove on when you want to get from A to B quick. It is so much fun to drive, and when the road gets twisty it is capable of hunkering down through the corners at some pretty insane speeds. Stiffer springs, beefier anti-roll bars, and more aggressive dampers keep the big rubber footprint safely in contact with the road. It is very much uprated in the suspension department over the standard i20 models, the camber of the front wheels is set with the top leaning inwards, and the chassis has been strengthened up throughout to cope with the more aggressive driving aptitude and performance, which many of its owners will be keen to explore. The limited slip-diff that Hyundai has placed in the FWD system ensures that you have wicked loads of grip coming out of corners, even in slippery conditions.
This is not your usual i20 – no way! The i20N hot hatch is as sensational to look at as it is to drive. The front of the new i20 N has a razor sharp nose with a low front air dam and spunky grille that is embellished between some very focused, sleek-looking headlights. Out the rear is a big exhaust tip and a roof wing (big spoiler). 18-inch alloy wheels are standard, and they look super stylish with the rest of the body kit. Dashes of red (grey if the whole car is red) flash about the exterior styling and it all works to give the car a nice racy feel to what is a sensationally sexy little hot hatchback. It has the ability to put the VW Polo GTi and the Ford Fiesta ST in their place: behind it.
Inside, the 2022 Hyundai i20 N Hatchback has you enjoying a sportier interior that boasts things like a sports steering wheel with an ‘N’ badge, a rev matching button, and N-mode selectors. The leather sport bucket seats are superb for the long haul, and when you do get down to boogie they’ll hold you in place through any quick cornering manoeuvres. The seats also have light blue ‘N’ logos embedded into the fabric. Light blue colouring in some of the trim effects is exclusive to the N model, while aluminium sports pedals and door sills are appealing on the eye.
A digital driver’s display looks the part, and there is a really decent 10-inch touchscreen with all the bells and whistles as part of the car’s features. You can connect directly to this touchscreen via wireless tech with your phone, and satellite navigation and active cruise control are features you will enjoy on this sporty little number as well. Actually, the latest Hyundai i20N Hatchback is loaded with kit, so you get things like a reversing camera, parking sensors, wireless charging for your phone, lane keeping assist, active cruise control, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a decent sound system among a long list of standard items. The only real upgrades you can get for extra is a cooler-looking blue exterior paint job, twin colouring for the roof, and a BOSE sound system.
Practicality goes with the fun drive, and you have 352 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place as well as a useful false floor compartment. You will get nice and comfortable very easily in either of the front seats. Back seat passengers will find a good level of room for this class of car. Head and leg room are pretty decent I have to say. For its class, the Hyundai i20 is a class-leader in spaciousness
For a truly fizzing and fun drive, the new Hyundai i20 N Hatch is the one to impress the most thus far for 2022. Enjoy!
