Want to buy a cool new electric SUV? Well do I have the one for you! Hyundai’s new IONIQ 5 has the practicality, comfort, and all the technology in spades, but it also delivers this in a futuristic boxy shape. I’d personally say that it’s pushing it a bit to say that the IONIQ 5 is an all-out SUV. SUVs are usually a bit more cumbersome and, well, large. I’d say the IONIQ 5’s cool looks are more aptly associated with a well-honed hatchback with a bit of extra muscle on the side. But it looks cool anyway! And it sure as eggs draws the looks as you silently appear over the horizon and whisk into view, pulling up at the kerb to grab a few things from your local Coles store.
Access to the boot space is via the powered tailgate. And you can’t wipe off the smug look on your face as it quietly opens up, seemingly by magic, for you to put your box full of flour, golden syrup, and butter for the neighbour’s bake-off night. There’s heaps of luggage space back here. Behind the rear seats, as much as 520 litres of boot space can be utilized, which increases up to 1580 litres when the second-row seats are fully folded down, providing excellent flat floor space. For added versatility, the second-row seats can also be slid forwards up to 135 mm or they will fold down in a 60:40 ratio. Best remove the dog first before even considering heading around to the butchers for a dozen racks of lamb!
Need to pick up the kids along the way? You might hear, “Oh… the traffic is really bad!” Traffic congestion alerts on the multimedia screen confirm the obvious state of affairs and suggest a better route to Maddison Ave to pick up little Johnnie. This handy feature could save you, say, 20 minutes, and you’ll be up the driveway in no time at all.
The 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a really useful bit of kit and comes with many cool features. A host of innovative infotainment and connectivity features are set up for those who live by smartphone alone. A 12.0-inch touchscreen shares a panel on the dash with another 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster for the driver’s zone. It’s the former screen that acts as a hub for all the entertainment features and acts as its display. Features like voice recognition software, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all present and correct.
Wireless smartphone charging and connection is a seamless affair, while the pad for charging your phone has been relocated to the top panel for the new model. A group of buttons now provides quicker access to the more frequently used features – such as the heated seats and heated steering wheel.
The IONIQ 5’s infotainment system is also awesome and, of course, has been upgraded to the latest version. This is a tech-savvy interior, with the digitized dashboard making quite the statement. The head-up display, with its augmented reality and navigation directions projected on the windshield, gives the car even more techy kudos. Lots of eco-friendly materials are used in the interior, so big ticks go in the environmentally friendly boxes as well.
If you do opt for a new IONIQ 5, you’ll enjoy one of the few in its category with an 800 V battery system. It charges up ultra-quick, and performs at consistently high levels with 80 kWh of output. Generally, you’ll find that the new IONIQ 5 will travel 495 km before needing a decent top up. That’s plenty of range for taking the girls to water polo in the weekend. And you know they like travelling with you because the IONIQ 5 is spacious and quiet, so it will be perfect for the girls’ night out! It is whisper quiet and rides the roads comfortably and with assurance.
ANCAP previously rated this EV with a full 5-stars a couple of years ago. Automatic emergency braking, electronic stability control, lane keep assist, driver attention detection – it’s all there. The more advanced lane-keeping assist system on the new model, along with the side-impact collision avoidance feature make this a really solid and safe EV choice.
Depending on whether you go for the models with the single electric motor or the dual-motor AWD models will dictate how quickly you can accelerate and cover the ground. At 7.5 seconds for the 0–100 km/h dash, the standard base model with its single electric motor driving the rear wheels should create enough squeals of excitement on the girls’ night out. But if you really want to hear them gasp, the AWD IONIQ 5 versions will see off the same sprint in 4.5 seconds.
EV buyers won’t need to look past the 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 – or at least it won’t be that easy to look further. This is a reasonably priced premium EV that is nice to drive and rather striking in its appearance.
