With distinctive styling, sound reliable engineering, and affordable pricing, the Hyundai Sonata is truly in a class of its own. The smooth 2.4 litre and 3.3 litre engines are responsive and powerful units that offer near bullet proof reliability. Hyundai is now making superb vehicles that challenge the best the car industry can offer.
To look at from the pavement, the sleek low slung design of the Hyundai Sonata captures a little bit of Audi’s car design found in the A6. The tear drop roof line gives a lovely smooth look to the Hyundai Sonata’s appearance and complements the smart angular nose. When looking at the Hyundai Sonata front on, one notices the purposeful look of the headlights, and the low down driving lights look good situated in the front air dam. At the rear, the curving taillights look nice.
Seating is comfortable and supportive, and the interior trim comes in very pleasant tones while being pleasing on the eye. The Hyundai Sonata has room for five occupants and travelling in this classy car is a pleasure – particularly with some of the advanced luxury items on offer. Even the base model, the Hyundai Sonata SLX, has top items like six airbags, height adjustable seat belts that are pretensioned with load limiters, an MP3 compatible CD system with six speakers, central locking with keyless entry, and an engine immobiliser to thwart any might-be thieves.
On the road, the Hyundai Sonata is sure-footed, and is light and easy to drive. The mums and dads will enjoy picking up the kids from school in this one, and the kids will like to be seen in the Hyundai Sonata too. Ample grip is available when tight cornering or emergency stops are necessary.
The Hyundai Sonata comes in four variants. The base model is the SLX 2.4 litre powered sedan. An Elite sedan version is also available with the 2.4 litre motor. If you want a V6 engine, again an SLX variant is available with the added power of the bigger engine. Finally, the V6 Elite sedan completes the impressive Hyundai Sonata range. Obviously, the Hyundai Sonata Elite models have the extra bells and whistles. Items like sumptuous leather seating, a seven speaker sound system with sub woofers and tweeters – awesome. Perhaps a more practical item is the reversing sensor for backing in or out of tight places. I remember, with some embarrassment, once reversing my Toyota GLXi out of a church car park. I looked in both wing mirrors but did not see the tree directly behind. Ooops!
The Hyundai Sonata is an efficient front wheel driven car. The 2.4 litre motor is an unobtrusive and responsive four cylinder unit offering plenty of power for everyday driving. The larger V6 motor has 173 kW of power available at 6000rpm and a healthy 304 Nm of torque at a handy 3500rpm. Translation: put the foot down to pass slower traffic and the Hyundai Sonata V6 responds effortlessly.
The Hyundai Sonata from Korea is a very well made car that offers the buyer a very competitive option in the mid-sized car market. Test drive one and you’ll see what I mean.
