At the time the Hyundai i40 Wagon was launched, everybody marvelled at the car’s sleek design. And, now with the production of the equally smooth looking Hyundai i40 Sedan, the i40 line-up is complete. I guess there could be a logical space for an iX40 but I wonder if that space is already filled with the Hyundai Santa Fe.
Glancing over the new i40 Sedan’s exterior reveals one of the striking standout features – which is the lengthy roofline that curves majestically from where the A-pillar leaves the bonnet to where the C-pillar takes the roofline to meet the wrap-around taillights. What this suggests is that the Hyundai i40 Sedan cleverly hides the large interior space that you’ll find when you climb aboard. Chrome surrounds the window sills, twin exhausts finish the i40 Sedan’s back end off, and a nice slanting crease line runs from the top of the front wheel arch to touch the taillights. At the front, the wheel arches are large – which does give the Hyundai i40 a strong nose finished with aggressive headlights and a low front air dam. A double take on the face of the Hyundai i40, and I reckon I can see the car smiling. Have a look, and you’ll see what I mean. You could definitely say that the Hyundai i45 Sedan does come across as a very classy four-door sedan.
Entering into the interior, and we find a high level of finish and gorgeous materials that make a very appealing four-door package. This strong statement of fresh art is captured best, I believe, in a line insert that starts in the front doors and flows across the dash. The line pleasantly drops to a curve in the middle of the dash where it sweeps through the middle of the centre console. The car is loaded with all the fruits of high-tech gadgetry and sumptuous luxury. Premium Hyundai i40 Sedan models come with heated front seats, climate control and a panoramic glass roof.
This i40 sedan is quite a car! In the centre of the dash is a clear multi-function display screen that can map your journey, show your average speed and inform you of your audio selections. A multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, and Bluetooth connections keep you at the right speed and connected with your friends or business colleagues.
A pleasant surprise was to find that the power for the Hyundai i40 comes from a high-tech 1.7 CRDi diesel engine. Hyundai suggest that the fuel efficient diesel engine allows you to travel up to 1250 km on a single tank. I imagine this would be accomplished with a concerted effort to drive efficiently. However, without much thought to efficiency, I reckon you could easily sneak past 1050 km regularly, which is a colossal distance when you think about it. You should be able to expect around 6 litres/100 km. The diesel motor is a DOHC four-cylinder motor that pumps out 100 kW and 320 Nm. A six-speed automatic transmission applies the power through to the front wheels, and the ride is a nice blend of supple and taut poetry in motion.
There are three versions of the Hyundai i40 Sedan: the base model being the Active, the middle version being the Elite and the flagship is the Premium model. Increasing additions of luxury goes with the name, but even the Hyundai i40 Active Sedan is a well-equipped car.
Each of the i40 Sedans come with a system of nine airbags to provide a top level of protection. Active Safety in the i40 means Vehicle Stability Management, Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control to guide you safely along the way. An Adaptive Front Light System (AFLS) is available on the Premium models, and this is a feature that really does enhance your night driving experience. Premium and Elite models also get the reverse camera along with 8 sensors to help you to park confidently in tight spaces.
Coasting the roads between any of the main centres in Australia is going to be effortless and efficient in the new Hyundai i40 Sedan. Sexy looks and a comfortable ride make it a great mid-to-large sedan.
