Infiniti cars are the luxury versions made by Nissan; just like Lexus is Toyota’s luxury models. We have just been provided with the new range of Infiniti Q30 cars that are a premium hatch of medium size. The well-built range of Q30 cars offers three engines and numerous levels of equipment and trim. Regardless of the model, these are very well equipped luxury cars. Three engines are available for powering the new Infiniti Q30. One is a peppy diesel, while the other two are sporty turbo-charged petrol units.
Let’s start with the Infiniti Q30 2.2D Sport and Sport Premium versions which are powered by a high-tech 2.2-litre, 125 kW, 350 Nm motor. The result is a refined drive thanks to the active noise cancellation through the stereo speakers. The Q30 2.2D has long legs and is happy cruising the motorway all day long. On the right piece of road the diesel model will easily eclipse 200 km/h, while eclipsing the 0-100 km/h sprint in less than 9 seconds.
Small and responsive, the 115 kW Infiniti Q30 1.6T offers a good amount of grunt. It won’t set any new land speed records – even amongst its peers – however the engine copes effortlessly with all road speeds and will accelerate quickly when asked. One of the noticeable characteristics of the 1.6T is its refinement.
The other petrol engine in the Q30 line-up is a 2.0-litre turbo motor that puts out 155 kW and 350 Nm. In this guise the Infiniti Q30 feels fast and capable.
The manual gear shift is light and positive, while the very smooth twin-clutch automatic is very relaxed and well suited to the luxury side of the new Q30 hatch.
Each Infiniti Q30 will ride the road well and handle the corners no problems at all. The low centre of gravity means that you can explore the chassis and enjoy the results. Grip levels are good, while the steering offers good feedback for the driver. It’s also well sorted in city streets.
On a practical note, you should find the Infiniti Q30 has a good size boot for luggage carrying duties (430 litres with the rear seats up) and the rear seat is split-folding. Rear seat room is useful without being class leading. Seat comfort is very good, and the quality of interior trim is excellent. I’d put the interior quality right up there with the best of them. A nice cosseting feel about the cabin is what you notice in a premium luxury brand like the Infiniti models.
A base equipment level will include dual-zone climate control, LED lights, auto braking, cruise control, lane departure warning, Bluetooth, a touchscreen display and automatic lights and wipers. Premium models add features like LED front fog lamps, a ten-speaker sound system, automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise control with a speed limiter, lane departure warning, heated front seats and the InTouch navigation system – all very nice!
A Sport model adds some flair to the already very nice exterior lines. Sport models add a redesigned front and rear bumpers that include diffusers. These models also feature 19-inch alloy wheels, a sport design grille, sportier front seats with integrated headrests, Alcantara/leatherette seat facings along with the InTouch navigation system.
Sport Premium models offer some top notch features that include: nappa leather upholstery, a nappa leather dashboard, nappa leather door inserts and armrests; an around car monitor with virtual view and moving object detection, Intelligent Park Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Brake Assist and Distance Control, and a fixed glass roof with a sliding sunshade.
All-in-all, the Infiniti Q30 is a nice smallish hatch that is presently a rare sight on our roads. This will only add to the exclusive feel that owning an Infiniti provides.
