Take the new Isuzu DMax ute out for a run and you’ll be impressed with its crisp engine response, decent comfort and solid build quality. This is the next generation DMax ute, so you’ll have all the latest electronic gadgetry, infotainment and style the 2019 DMax brings to the table. When the Isuzu DMax was first introduced the popularity and sales success was really good here and across the Tasman. The DMax is a great ute and competitively priced.
Driving a new Isuzu DMax is rewarding. With stylish looks and plenty of on-road presence to satisfy the conscientious ute buyer who is after a sporty, modern performer, the DMax makes a great choice. Looking around at what other brand new current utes you have to choose from, the Isuzu DMax is the one with sharpest lines in my book. Look elsewhere, and the current band of 2019 utes on sale are a little podgy and dull in comparison. The 2019 DMax’s front and rear ends are particularly well designed with nice interesting lines, sharp angular interfaces and classy detailing.
So, the latest Isuzu D-Max ute uses the familiar chain-driven 3.0-litre turbo-diesel motor. Gutsy and great for towing, the engine delivers 130 kW at its peak, while the maximum torque is a healthy 430 Nm. Economy for the new DMax is around the 9.5 litres/100 km mark in the real world of a day of heading into town, towing a trailer, cruising the motorway, and taking the dogs down to the beach. In a laboratory test it returns 7-to-8 litres/100 km. So, it’s actually pretty good and compares well with any other modern ute, though the 2.0-litre TDI Amarok and 2.3 Navara are other frugal beasts. The latest Isuzu DMax comes with a diesel particulate filter and meets Euro 5 emissions regulations.
You get a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission for getting power to the road. If you require 4WD, then there will be a DMax to suit. 2WD (RWD) DMax utes are also available. The towing capacity for the dual cab 4×4 model is 750 kilograms (unbraked trailer), or 3500 kg for a braked trailer – what you’d expect for this type of vehicle, making this a versatile ute ready for work.
All utes currently sold on the market, whether double cab or single cab, have a large tray in comparison to that of the equivalent utes made a couple of decades ago. The Isuzu’s DMax Dual Cab model has a tray dimension that’s 1552 mm long, 1530 mm wide, and 465mm deep. This means that it will carry a full size pallet. Now, you can also choose your new Isuzu DMax in a variety of shapes and sizes. Whether you want a cab chassis or pick-up, a dual cab, extra cab/space cab, or a humble single-cab, Isuzu has the model for you. Versatility to make the ute exactly how you want it matters these days, and Isuzu are great at providing the best type of DMax you’re after.
eNew DMax Equipment levels are good, and especially so in the top-spec Double Cab model which boasts an 8.0-inch media screen with Bluetooth phone and audio, 2 USB ports in the front, 1 USB port in the rear, satellite navigation, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with cruise control and audio buttons, cup holders between the seats, decent door pockets with bottle holders all around, a twin glove box set-up, a pair of cup-holders for rear seat passengers, electric windows, map pockets, a six-speaker sound system, leather seats, a powered driver’s seat, a reversing camera, 18-inch alloys, LED daytime running lights with projector headlights, side steps, single-zone climate control, keyless entry and push-button start. This equipment package alongside the DMax’s nice looks means you have yourself quite the drive.
If you do opt for the Dual Cab models, then in the back there’s enough space for three adults to travel in comfort. It also has to be said that rear seat passengers in a DMax are pretty well looked after compared with some other rivals. Knee and head room is good. A very creative storage solution is found underneath the rear seat base which, when lifted up, reveals a large storage area you can store tools, blankets and other gear.
Safety capability is always an important aspect when buying new, and Isuzu DMax models offer their owner an extensive range of active and passive safety features. Stringent ANCAP safety testing gave the Isuzu DMax 4×4 Crew Cab and Isuzu DMax 4×2 Crew Cab High-Ride models a maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating.
The best looking Isuzu DMax Dual Cabs are the ones fitted with the optional genuine Isuzu bullbar, nudge bar, snorkel, ladder rack and sports bar. Grab these and you’ll be noticed!
