A day in the life of a farmer consists of many chores, errands and a bit of recreation on the side. It’s a healthy, honest lifestyle that can be hard work and yet truly rewarding. To run a farm you need good equipment that doesn’t break down, and that’s why farmers look to tried and true brands. One ute that’s stood the test of time is the Isuzu pick-up. Stemming back many decades, the Isuzu pick-up truck was manufactured and marketed by Isuzu between 1972 and 2002 and was known as the Faster. Three generations of tough reliable Isuzu Faster workhorse pick-ups saw many farmers, builders and tradespeople relying on these utes to do their business. The Isuzu Faster was succeeded worldwide by the tough Isuzu D-MAX. In Australia and NZ, between 2003 and 2008, the Isuzu D-Max was marketed as the Holden Rodeo, but after 2008 was relaunched as the Holden Colorado. The Isuzu D-MAX itself was also introduced in Australia during 2008, selling alongside the Holden-badged Colorado version.
Tough and rugged, the Isuzu D-MAX tackles the demands of hauling a tray full of pallets, firewood for the winter or a spray tank of weed killer with ease. Boasting 4WD prowess, the new D-MAX can help the farmer cross the river to bring in the ewes from the back country or feed out through the drought months. Your ute becomes your companion when you rely on it to bring food home to put on the table for the family. The 2020 Isuzu D-MAX ute has a spacious tray behind the double cab styling (1570 mm x 1530 mm), or 1777 mm – 2550 mm long x custom built mm wide in the single cab chassis or space cab variants. Actually, the options are plenty for fitting your D-MAX out with the perfect tray for your individual needs. So the models available are: five variants of 4×2 D-MAX utes or eight variants of 4×4 D-MAX utes.
2021 sees sleeker styling and more power where it matters. The new D-MAX is more streamlined over all, yet still provides an aggressive stance that means “I mean business”. Lined up against the other mainstream utes the new D-Max looks very sharp and sporty – particularly in Crew Cab LS-U or X-TERRAIN guise. Under the hood the new D-Max has an uprated 3.0-litre turbo-diesel motor that’s built tough and delivers a strong 450 Nm of orque between 1600 and 2600 rpm, along with a peak power output of 140 kW at 3600 rpm. The power is clean and efficient, strong and plentiful. You should probably expect around 8 litres/100 km fuel economy for everyday use.
Two gearbox options are available; the manual being an Isuzu MVL-6S 6-speed manual with high torque capacity and output reduction. The automatic is an Aisin AWR6B45 II 6-speed unit with a sequential shift and brake shift lock which is electronically controlled. It also has a tri-mode function with a fuel-saving lock-up torque converter on gears 3, 4, 5 and 6. The auto can also master Uphill/Downhill Transmission Control by holding a gear in varied-gradient ascents. It also selects the gear on steep descents to hold your speed with the addition of engine braking on the 4×4 utes. The 4×4 models boast a low and high range gearbox with “Terrain Command” control with ‘shift on the fly’ 2-high↔4-high selection at up to 100 km/h. The 4-low range also has a rear differential lock for getting over super tough and slippery terrain.
Underneath the new D-MAX is a solid chassis base that offers tough, dependable strength. All new 2020 Isuzu D-MAX utes have a front suspension that is independent, high-riding, coil sprung, gas shocked absorbers, having upper and lower wishbones and a stabiliser bar. At the rear things change depending on the choice of D-MAX. The rear suspension on the 4×2 SX Space Cab Ute, LS-M and all Cab Chassis models have a Heavy Duty alloy-steel overslung long-span semi-elliptic leaf spring set-up with gas shock absorbers. 4×2 and 4×4 models have an alloy-steel overslung long-span semi-elliptic leaf sprung set-up with gas shock absorbers.
The SX and LS-M models sit on 17-inch alloys with all terrain rubber, while the LS-U and X-TERRAIN boast 18-inch alloys with a special Highway-Terrain rubber tyre. All models are rated for towing 750 kg un-braked and 3500 kg braked.
Slip inside the new Isuzu D-MAX and a nice smart dark grey cloth with accented stitching greets you in the SX models. A higher grade cloth with a pretty pattern and accented stitching welcomes you in the LS-M and LS-U models. For the X-TERRAIN version the interior is awash in fine accented leather materials. All new D-Max utes can handle getting dirty and all the materials above look to be hard wearing. Each cabin is well screwed together and things feels solid and capable of years of faultless service.
So to put you in the picture, standard equipment on the D-Max SX includes features like: autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist (automatic), turn assist, wrong-pedal acceleration prevention, traffic sign monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention monitoring, auto high beam, a reversing camera, a 4.2-inch trip computer display, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, the stylish accent stitched cloth trim, manual air-conditioning and 17-inch steel wheels.
Stepping up to a new D-MAX LS-M brings goodies like: the higher-grade of accent stitched cloth trim, a rear USB connector, front seat back pockets, a fold-down central armrest, a larger six-speaker audio system, Bi-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, body-coloured mirrors and stylish 17-inch alloy wheels.
Next comes the D-MAX LS-U, which adds: rear parking sensors, a powered lumbar support for the driver’s seat, a leather-trimmed gear knob, soft-touch door trim, a soft central armrest lid, vanity mirrors for the driver and front passenger, carpet flooring, a bigger 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto, the factory satellite navigation system, side steps, LED rear lights and sexier 18-inch alloy wheels.
Topping the D-MAX out with the range-topping X-Terrain gets you features like: front parking sensors, leather-accented seats, a powered driver’s seat, keyless entry and start, remote engine start, an eight-speaker sound system, its own unique exterior trim and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The 2021 Isuzu D-MAX offers a full suite of driver aids across the entire range. Autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, turn assist, traffic sign recognition, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high-beam are included even on the base model SX, making this, potentially, the safest new ute across the board. D-MAZX utes with an automatic gearbox also feature wrong-pedal acceleration warning, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. There are eight airbags as standard, including a new central airbag designed to stop the passenger and driver’s flailing arms and heads crashing into each other in a serious side-impact crash.
